School Lunches You've Probably Never Heard About

08:14
Here’s what school lunches around the world look like. Meals for kids in different countries are truly amazing and surprising! Every country has its standards for school meals. Some schools offer convenience food and snacks for lunch, and some cook set meals for students. What do you think the most popular ingredients of school lunches are? Well, how about octopus, kimchi, or chili? Are you curious what kids eat in South Korea? What they prefer in Turkey? Some of those lunches are quite unusual. Watch and try to find your childhood meals! TIMESTAMPS South Korea 0:41 Japan 1:23 Turkey 1:55 Thailand 2:28 France 2:59 Finland 3:28 Russia 4:08 Hungary 4:34 Israel 4:53 Colombia 5:25 Italy 5:55 Australia 6:37 Chile 7:11 SUMMARY - The system of planning school meals in South Korea is one of the best in the world. Lunches are served on special trays. The two biggest sections of the tray are usually for soup and rice. Smaller sections are for salads, seafood, veggies, and fruit. - Japanese school lunches are almost the same as the South Korean ones: hot soup, rice, poultry or fish, salad, and milk. Students are not allowed to bring their food with them until they reach high school. - It's interesting that, though children in Turkey have 1 hour for lunch, cafeterias are rare in this country. So students either go home for lunch (which might be hard to do if you live on the other side of the town!) or take food from home. - Students in Thailand don't eat in the canteen, just like their "colleagues" from Japan. They are usually given soup, pork in sweet and sour sauce, rice, and a pudding wrapped in banana leaves. - Typical lunch served in the west of France looks very healthy. It is fish, spinach, potatoes, cheese, and bread. It is quite big as the French consider lunch the main meal of the day. - Finland takes school lunches very seriously. Every student is offered snacks during the morning and evening classes, as well as lunch. Children eat their lunches in a canteen where they can choose whatever they want from a large variety of dishes. - In Russia, students can have free breakfast from 9 a.m. till 12 p.m. Lunches after 12 p.m. are paid. Children sometimes have lunch at home if they live near the school. If it is a school lunch, it is usually soup, fish or meat with a side dish of rice or buckwheat, and compote. - Hungary is famous for its big portions in restaurants and cafes. Same goes for school lunches. Children have several courses, with, for example, noodle soup, baked beans with chicken, and nuts for dessert. - Israel schools have the policy of a healthy diet. The government banned fatty and sugary things from school lunches. But the thing is that children mostly bring their meals from home. - 60-70% of children in Colombia are given free nutritious lunches. Students of state schools eat one hot meal a day. Their typical meal consists of soup, rice or pasta, salad, meat, and fruit juice. - Before lunch, in the morning, children get snacks (crackers, breadsticks, fresh fruit, or homemade cookies). For lunch they get two courses: a first course is often pasta or rice with seafood or vegetables, a second course - fish, meat, or cheese. - Authorities in Australia fight against children's obesity. That's why products rich in sugar, salt, and fat are forced out of school menu. But you can find their healthier replacements such as sandwiches, sushi, corn and fruit available at any time. - Students in Chile have nice and varied lunches. An example can be a meal with rice, beef roll, French fries, salad, avocado, orange juice, and fruit in the sauce for dessert. Why Japanese Are So Thin According to Science

09:37
Why are Japanese people so thin? What do people eat in Japan? While the rest of the world is seeing anywhere from 15 to over 30% of its population severely overweight, Japan has managed to keep that number at just 3.6%. When it comes to health tips, it's better to turn to the country with the longest life expectancy and one of the lowest obesity rates on the planet. If you’re ready to find out how the Japanese manage to stay so effortlessly thin, keep our new video! In Japan, they usually stick to 3 wholesome meals a day that don’t leave them hungry or dealing with sudden cravings. Those who do snack keep it in small quantities and with a lot of moderation. Also, the secret to Japan’s success begins with their diet, which is pretty carb-heavy and low in saturated fats. Their main dishes of choice include vegetables, grains, fish, and meat. Dairy products and fruits are consumed in moderation. They tend to stay away from foods with excessive amounts of salt and sugar, like burgers and soda. TIMESTAMPS: Diet 0:50 No snacking 1:39 Fast food 2:02 Eating on time 2:58 Exercise for kids 3:44 Portion sizes 4:27 A great public transportation system 5:20 Tea time 6:15 Dinnerware 7:25 Food as an experience 8:09 #japan #japanesediet #japanesefood Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - The secret to Japan’s success begins with their diet, which is pretty carb-heavy and low in saturated fats. Their main dishes of choice include vegetables, grains, fish, and meat. - Just like the rest of the world, a lot of Japanese people have a hectic schedule that doesn’t leave a lot of time or opportunity to prepare a home-cooked meal. In that case, they can turn to their version of fast food, which is usually a lot healthier and resembles home-style cooking. - Most Japanese people have very regulated meal times. They eat 3 filling meals a day, with breakfast usually happening between 8 and 9am, lunch from 12 to 1pm, and dinner between 6 and 8pm. - It’s a lot more common for Japanese children to walk or cycle to school. Of course, other countries have a lot of reasons why it might not be efficient or safe for kids to hoof it to class. - Portion sizes have been on a steep rise in the last 20 years throughout the world. For example, countries like Australia, Canada, Germany, the U.S., and the U.K. have much larger fast food portions than Japan. - Separate bicycle lanes and plenty of safe areas for pedestrians are common sites in Japan. This allows the Japanese to naturally burn calories as they commute to and from work or school every day. - Tea, especially the green variety, is the number one beverage in Japan. Green tea has been praised for having a ton of major health benefits, like increasing metabolism, burning fat, fighting anxiety, and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, to name a few. - The practice of using chopsticks also helps in weight management, since they make you eat more slowly and in smaller bites. This slow process of eating helps people catch when they’re feeling full and avoid eating too much. The fact that food is served on a bunch of plates also slows down the process. - The number one way that the Japanese stay thin has to do with removing distractions and being mindful about the process of food consumption. Eating in Japan is treated with respect. A Japanese Method to Develop Creativity in Kids

09:17
Japanese people are known for their intelligence, politeness, and wellness. Why is this nation so unique and different from the rest of the world? It seems we’ve found the answer – they have an incredibly cool education system and unique teaching methods! There is a unique method in Japanese schools for developing creativity in kids. We believe that the whole world needs to adopt it! It’s called “Nameless paints.” In this video, we'll tell you how it works. Watch till the end – there is a small but brilliant bonus for you. Other videos you might like: 15 Examples of Japanese Etiquette That Will Drive You Crazy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SR-H7yr9Ceo& Why Japanese Are So Thin According to Science https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxsnYsA549Y& 8 Japanese Parenting Rules All Kids Need https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_gnpIs8qMo& TIMESTAMPS: “Nameless paints” 0:34 Manners before knowledge 2:58 The academic year starts on April 1st 3:33 Students clean their school themselves 4:18 School lunch is provided on a standardized menu 4:59 After-school workshops are very popular 5:32 Students learn Japanese calligraphy and poetry 6:15 Students have to wear school uniform 6:50 The school attendance rate is about 99.99% 7:23 A single test decides the students’ futures 7:55 College years are the best ’holidays’ in life 8:32 SUMMARY: - “Nameless paints” includes ten tubes that don’t have color names such as “yellow,” “blue,” or “green.” Instead, there are only spots of a particular color or colors on each tube. As you can see, the spots are also different sizes. - In Japanese schools, students don’t take any exams until they reach grade four (the age of 10). The goal for the first three years of school is not to judge the child’s knowledge, but to establish good manners and to develop their character. - While most schools in the world begin their academic year in September or October, in Japan, it is April that marks the start of the academic and business calendar. The first day of school often coincides with one of the most beautiful natural phenomena — the time of cherry blossom. - In Japanese schools, students have to clean the classrooms, cafeterias, and even toilets all by themselves. Most Japanese schools do not employ janitors or custodians. - All classmates eat in their classroom together with the teacher. This helps build positive teacher-student relationships. - To get into a good junior high school, most Japanese students enter a preparatory school or attend private after-school workshops. - Japanese calligraphy, or Shodo, involves dipping a bamboo brush in ink and using it to write hieroglyphs on rice paper. - While some schools have their attire, traditional Japanese school uniform consists of a military style for boys and a sailor outfit for girls. - At the end of high school, Japanese students have to take an exam that determines their future. A student can choose one college they would like to go to, and that college has a particular score requirement. - Having gone through ‘examination hell,’ Japanese students usually take a little break. In this country, college is often considered the best years of a person’s life. Sometimes, Japanese people call this period a ‘vacation’ before work. The program began as a 2 year pilot in 1966. The program was supposed to serve schools in poor neighborhoods and in areas where kids had to travel a long distance in order to make it to school. To get schools to participate Congress allowed for higher payments to schools that were defined as being in "severe need". In its first year, the SBP spent US$573,000 serving about 80,000 children. In 1971 Congress modified the program, making it available to schools who needed to improve the nutrition and dietary needs of children in low income families and with working parents. They also changed the way funding was reimbursed, from categorical grant reimbursement to per-meal reimbursement. The SBP was permanently authorized in 1975 for all schools who needed to provide better nutrition for their students and for higher reimbursement of the school. Federal funding is provided in the form of cash reimbursements for each breakfast served, varied in amount by the family income of the participating child. All children in participating schools and residential institutions are eligible for a federally subsidized meal, regardless of family income. However, free meals must be offered to children from families with incomes below 130% of the federal poverty level, and reduced price meals to those with family incomes between 130% and 185% of the poverty level. Those families over the 185% poverty level have to pay full price for their meals which are set by the school. Even though the children have to pay for their own meals, the school is still reimbursed. The most current reimbursement rates for participating schools are $1.55 for each free breakfast, $1.25 for each reduced-price breakfast, and $0.27 for each paid breakfast. A school may receive a higher reimbursement rate for serving free or reduced-price meals to more than 40% of their students in the previous year. The higher rates can be as much as $0.30 more than standard rates. Schools in Hawaii and Alaska receive higher reimbursement rates than the schools in the contiguous United States. The percentage of meals being served at these higher rates is about 77%. These reimbursements are active from July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2013. The program is administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service and funded by annual agricultural appropriations. The USDA has to formulate their meal patterns and nutrition according to the Dietary Guidelines of Americans as directed by The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. There are plans in place for the SBP to gradually start changing their meals in 2013. Some of the changes include more whole grains, appropriate calorie counts according to grade, and lower sodium content. The sodium content must be reduced enough to meet standards, at the latest, by the 2022-2023 school year. As of 2010, the School Breakfast Program was the second largest of the targeted food aid programs administrated by the Food and Nutrition Service, feeding 16 million children. This compares with the School Lunch program, which helped feed 32 million children a day in 2010.

The term "breakfast club" is commonly used to describe such facilities in the United Kingdom. Breakfast clubs generally enhance both academic performance and behavior, especially for children whose parents might not otherwise be able to afford to provide them with regular meals. Breakfast provision is however less prevalent compared with school lunch, both in the UK and worldwide. As of 2013, only about half the school children in the UK have access to a breakfast club. Attendance of a breakfast club is not mandatory; many parents prefer to feed their children at home. The clubs are often run by schools, but can also be community run. Schools themselves are the most common location for breakfast clubs, but they can also be found in churches, community halls or even commercial premises. Breakfast clubs are sometimes open to children from more than one school.

34 DELICIOUS FOOD HACKS WITH CHEESE AND OTHER GOODIES

10:25
Simple recipes with cheese for everyone There is no denying that cheese is delicious, especially when it comes to cooking with cheese. There are limitless recipes you can try with all different varieties of cheese, such as mozzarella, parmesan cheese or cheddar cheese. Since it is such a delicious ingredient for cooking and filled with protein we created some simple and delicious recipes with cheese that can try right away. In addition, we included some bonus cooking hacks and tips to make your time in the kitchen more enjoyable. 1. Simplest macaroni and cheese recipe. If you are at work or would like to have macaroni and cheese as a snack instead of making a huge pot of food. Try this little trick that will literally take you 3 minutes to make this meal. In a mug, add a scoop of pasta, then, add the adequate amount of water and microwave for 2 minutes. Stir it really well and make sure there is no more water left in the mug. Then add some milk and cheese and stir until the cheese into the mug and Bon Appetite. 2. Delicious cheese toastie recipe If you would like to have a nice cheese toast fast but you don't own a grill, don't let that stop you. Apply some butter on a slice of bread on both sides, then, add two slices of cheddar cheese and then another slice of bread with butter spread on it. Then, place your sandwich in a kitchen foil and seal it. After that, take your clothing iron and place it on top of the toastie for a couple of minutes max, then turn it and press the other side as well with your clothing iron and, there you have it. 3. DIY cheddar sticks This might as well be the most delicious treat in the whole world. Take a block of cheddar cheese and cut it in rectangular blocks. Place one wooden stick in each block. Then, dip it into flour, after that dip it into an egg wash, and finally in breadcrumbs. Lastly, boil some oil and fry your cheesy sticks. Enjoy with some ketchup or the sauce of your choice. 4. Oil Hack! Instead of accidentally pouring excess oil on your food or your frying pan. Pour some oil in a clean spray bottle and start spraying. This way you'll be able to monitor how much oil you consume and also keep your meals healthier. 5.How to make your own iced coffee Make your filter coffee, or your espresso, or your instant coffee with hot water as you would normally do with or without sugar. (Do Not add milk). Then pour it into your ice tray and place it in the freezer. When it's time for you to have a nice glass of iced coffee, instead of running to the closest coffee shop, just take 5-6 cubes of the iced coffee you prepared, place them in a glass with some milk or water and stir. Enjoy! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Timestamps: 0:07 - DIY mugshot mac and cheese 0:33 - Cool cheese toastie 1:12 - Cheese grate hack 1:34 - DIY cheesy sticks 2:13 - Delicious ham and cheese toastie recipe 4:02 - Cookie decorating trick 4:32 - How to reseal a plastic bag 5:04 - How to make your bananas last longer 5:20 - Amazing oil trick 5:51 - How to soften hard bread 6:07 - Frozen yogurt treats 6:22 - DIY peeler 6:34 - Strawberry and chocolate recipe 7:34 - Ice tray hacks 8:01 - How to make iced coffee 8:51 - Oreo cookies trick 9:23 - How to cut a watermelon (easy) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music by Epidemic Sound: https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Our Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/5Minute.Crafts.Girly/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/5.min.crafts/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/5m_crafts Subscribe to 5-Minute MAGIC: http://bit.ly/2ldditZ 5-Minute Crafts KIDS: https://goo.gl/PEuLVt The Bright Side of Youtube: https://goo.gl/rQTJZz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.brightside.me/ Music by Epidemic Sound: https://www.epidemicsound.com/

25 AWESOME BREAKFAST IDEAS

11:41
BREAKFAST IDEAS I don't know about you guys but for me breakfast is everything! Not only I try to make my breakfasts nutritious and yummy but I also try to make them look good. Because stylish and fun breakfast sets great mood for the working day. So here's the hack. I guess everybody has some eggs and sausages in the fridge pretty much all the time. You'll need 4 and a half sausages. First of all, cut every sausage in halves. Then cut every half in half again. And join two parts together with a toothpick. Now put these sausages in the form of a star on the frying pan and break three eggs inside of the star. When your starry eggs are ready take out the toothpicks and add some tomatoes and greens to your liking! ; ) Blueberry Pancakes In a large bowl, sift together flour, salt, baking powder and sugar. In a small bowl, beat together egg and milk. Stir milk and egg into flour mixture. Mix in the butter and fold in the blueberries. Set aside for 1 hour. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides and serve hot. Kyushoku: The Making of a Japanese School Lunch

22:40
Ever since 1954, kyushoku (school lunch) has been an official part of the Japanese school curriculum. Over the years, the laws and menu items have changed, from adding the role of a nutritionist to including rice. Get an inside look into how the Japanese school lunch is made and what food education looks like in one of Japan's public elementary schools. SUBTITLES! I have two English versions. The regular "English" only translates the Japanese portions. The "English UK" subtitles have captions for the entire video. If you don't know how to change your subtitle settings, check out https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/100078. Special thanks to Umejima Elementary School in Adachi-ku, Tokyo, that let me film over two days. You can see their school lunch menu at http://www.adachi.ed.jp/adaume/kyusyokulist.html. This video wouldn't have been possible without the generous support from those on Patreon. To support projects like this, please go to http://bit.ly/PatreonLWIF. It typically consisted of bread, cheese, milk, half an apple and half an orange. The original Norwegian name for the meal was Oslofrokosten. The Oslo Breakfast had been designed by professor Carl Schiøtz to be as healthy as possible, with widely reported studies suggesting it delivered excellent results for the children's long-term health. During the 1930s the Oslo breakfast became famous and was copied by programs in Scandinavia, Europe, and the wider world. Many of these initiatives were small scale however, sometimes restricted to just a single school. By the late 1950s the provision of Oslo breakfasts by schools had largely ceased; sometimes they were replaced by more popular hot meal provision, or sometimes just dropped altogether as rising prosperity meant the provision of free school meals was seen as less necessary.

The problem with online charter schools

05:22
States are taking a multi-million dollar gamble on a technology that doesn’t seem to work. Watch: http://bit.ly/2EiUnqy - The colleges where the American dream is still alive. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO In 32 states plus DC, students of all ages can bypass brick-and-mortar schools for online charters. Most of these schools are run by publicly-traded companies, which means the profits they earn after running schools with taxpayer funds go toward paying their shareholders. These schools enroll less than 1% of American public school students right now, but the share is growing. In their ads, these schools promise autonomy and flexibility. They appeal to students eager to escape bullies or classrooms where they feel unsuccessful. But the data show that attending these schools sets kids back academically— by a lot. And despite their poor performance, states have been slow to close these schools down. Reading list: Arianna Prothero and Maya Riser-Kositsky calculated the lobbying and campaign spending totals for K12 and Connections Academy for Education Week/edweek.org: https://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2016/11/03/outsized-influence-online-charters-bring-lobbying-a.html This 2015 study from the Center for Research on Education Outcomes at Stanford University is the most comprehensive nationwide look at online charters to date. Researchers there found that attending an online charter school for a year is equivalent to missing 180 days of instruction in math, and 72 days of instruction in reading: https://credo.stanford.edu/pdfs/OnlineCharterStudyFinal2015.pdf June Ahn (NYU) and Andrew McEachin (RAND) did a similar study of Ohio’s online charter schools and got similar results. They found that even high-achieving students who attending online charters in that state ended the year significantly behind their peers in brick-and-mortar schools: http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.3102/0013189X17692999 Thanks to folks at the National Education Policy Center for sharing their data on online charter enrollment from 2011 through 2016. 28 EGG-STREMELY DELICIOUS HACKS

16:12
EGG-SHELLENT HACKS Eggs are easy to cook! They're cheap. I'm pretty sure you have them in the fridge right now. But how to make sure each time you cook eggs you can create a little masterpiece?! These egg hacks will surely help you with that! Some people put the eggs in cold water others put water to boiling then drop in the egg. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages. The difference is in how fast you heat up the egg. Starting with cold water, lets you heat the egg more slowly, which keeps the whites from getting rubbery. This method takes longer and gives you less control over the cooking time. Besides the egg will be harder to peel. In boiling water, the egg heats up really fast, making it much easier to control cooking time. But this method has a . Because the egg heats up so fast the shell can crack. And how to get that perfectly peeled egg each time?! Place your eggs in boiling water and cook for a certain amount of time. Then place your eggs into an ice bath and leave them there for about 10 - 15 minutes. After that peeling the egg is very easy. Just tap it at the table, roll it a few times and the shell will go off by itself. Perfect! How long should you cook the eggs? If you cook the eggs in the already boiling water you will always be able to control the result, you'll see in the video how the yolk looks like depending on the cooking time! Pick those to your liking! We’re done with boiled eggs. Let’s get on to fried ones. We have the pan on medium heat. Let’s add some butter. Now break your egg carefully. The heat should be sufficient but not to high, so that white cooks but doesn’t bubble. And here comes the egg hack – adding a bit of water and now we put the lid on. This creates a kind of a steam bath for an egg. Which results in a beautiful bright egg yolk and a cooked through white. And last but not the least way of cooking the eggs- scrambled eggs. First let’s crack the eggs into the bowl. Oops, a piece of the shell fell right in! If you don’t like your scrambled eggs with a shell. Then get a shell from a broken egg and use it to get broken piece out of the bowl. To cook those perfect scrambled eggs, you need to beat them in a bowl. Then seize in with salt and pepper to taste. Now melt some butter in the pan. There should be quite a lot of it. Next, pour the eggs in and wait. Make sure to keep the heat pretty low. When the eggs start to settle on the edge, take your spatula and start stirring the eggs from the outside in. When the eggs are about 2/3 cooked, we need to use another egg hack and a little bit more butter. Melt the butter and it will get our scrambled eggs a wonderful creamy taste. When you think the eggs need little bit more cooking, remove them from the heat. 12 Unexpected Etiquette Rules from Around the World

10:31
Do you know other countries’ food etiquette rules? 🍽 When you travel abroad and try the local cuisine, you might notice how a certain country’s table manners are very different from your own. Here are 12 quite unexpected food etiquette rules from across the globe! 🌎 TIMESTAMPS: Don’t use forks in Thailand 1:10 Don’t “clean your plate” in China 1:55 Be ready to share a plate in Ethiopia 2:39 In Italy, you’ll insult the chef if you ask for extra cheese 3:22 Don’t ask for salt and pepper in Portugal 4:05 Be careful with chopsticks in Japan 4:45 Don’t touch food with your left hand in the Middle East 5:32 Don’t just sip on your wine in Georgia 6:18 Don’t fill your own glass in Japan 6:56 Only drink cappuccino before noon in Italy 7:32 Guests are welcomed with half a cup of tea in Kazakhstan 8:21 A clean teapot is a teapot without a soul in China 9:17 Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - In Thailand, picking food up with a fork is considered bad form. However, you are allowed to push food onto a spoon using a fork… that’s it! - In China, however, it’s impolite to finish eating everything on your plate. Empty plates indicate that a host hasn’t served enough food and guests are still hungry. - As you sit at the table in Ethiopia waiting for someone to give you a plate to eat from, you might miss the actual meal! Everyone else will just eat from one large serving plate in the middle of the table without using any cutlery. - Although Italians do love this product, it’s considered rude to ask for extra cheese. It may insult the chef because they take it as you not liking the dish the way they’ve prepared it and wanting to change it. - If you ask for salt or pepper in Portugal, you may hurt people’s feelings. It’s kinda like with Italy; the cook may feel insulted by the fact that you need to “spice up” the dish they’ve served you. - According to tradition, people place chopsticks vertically during funerals. In a restaurant, doing this may insult the owner. - In the Middle East, India, and some African countries, the left hand is used for…uh…cleaning yourself up after going to the bathroom. - If you find yourself at a dinner party in Japan and wine is involved, never get a refill yourself. You’re supposed to fill the glass of the person sitting next to you at the table, and they’ll return the favor. - Italians do drink cappuccinos, of course, but it’s mostly a breakfast drink or even a substitute for breakfast. But if you drink this milky foamy coffee later in the day, it can upset your stomach, at least according to the locals. - When we think “tea ceremony,” we usually associate it with the UK and all their fancy tea-drinking etiquette. But it turns out there are plenty of tea fans in Kazakhstan, and they’ve got rules when it comes to drinking it as well. - If you’ve been invited to a tea ceremony in China and offer your help with the dishes afterwards, don’t even think about washing that teapot! The Chinese don’t wash teapots, especially traditional clay ones, with dish liquid.
