Online marketing is really tricky this way. There could be something special about it, or they could have been in the marketplace so much longer that they build up so much brand credibility that they can get away with pretty much murder while you can't, right? #2: People make their changes based on opinions. You don't want to make changes based on opinions. You want to make changes based off of facts. A lot of times, your competitors are doing changes to their websites just because they feel like they want to do those changes. They have that gut feeling that this is going to work for them. Well, gut feelings don't necessarily create multiple million dollar companies or billion dollar organizations. Data does. You want to use data to make changes on your website. That's why I use CrazyEgg whenever I make changes on my website. I'm continually using it to run split tests. If I just copy someone it's not necessarily going to work for me. I got to run tests to see what works for my audience. #3: You're different than your competition. You need your own unique selling proposition especially with social media marketing. If someone's already bigger than you copying them won't make you bigger than them. You gotta be different, and by being different you need to create a unique selling proposition. So, for example, if they're a really big corporation, like I used to have a agency when I was younger and I used to compete with iProspect. iProspect would say, hey, we work with big brands like Coca-Cola and McDonald's. Well, you know, a lot of people would come to me and be like, Neil, why should we hire you instead of iProspect? It shows in their job posting that hey, you get to work on accounts like Coca-Cola and McDonald's. Well, on the flip side, if you work with me, you're ging to talk with me. You get that personalized experience, right? That was my unique selling proposition. I'd be like, "if you call me, you know I'm going to be picking up, and I'm going to be the one helping you". I'm going to be the one who's held responsible for your results, and they like that. I put myself in a different position than my competitors. Did I ever beat them in size? No, but by making myself different and standing out I was able to grow my business much faster.

We have used the 5 above and they are all very useful, although the Google Keyword Planner has plenty of limitations. Competitor analysis is important because it can help you uncover and learn about opportunities you are not taking advantage of. Imagine you can see a list of your competitors top search engine keywords to see how much traffic you are missing out on. Sometimes you focus so much on creating the content you think is important or optimizing your existing Google AdWords and Bing Ads campaigns that you forget to see what your competitors are doing. Since PPC Advertising and Search Engine Optimization involves competitors, you need to use competitive analysis tools. You don't need to copy everything that your competitors are doing, but you will find a ton of ideas. When you are really drawing a blank and struggling to improve your account, you can see where you are falling behind competitors. It’s very important because if you type in the name of your product or service online you will either be somewhere, or you will be nowhere. It’s very important you start to identify and look at the people who are the top of the search engines, who have a presence on Facebook or LinkedIn, and just identify what they are doing. Now it’s very easy to track this, and it can be them as an organisation or a particular product or service. Then when you start to use tools, like SEMrush, you can analyse the traffic that is going to your competitor’s website, which keywords they utilise – whether that be paid for or organic – you can begin to see and build a profile of where they are gaining their business from online and you can adapt your strategy along similar lines. If you do pay per click (PPC), that then gives you analysis on whose bidding against those keywords and the percentage share that you have of that keyword. Obviously the more important that is to your business, the more key that is a product, the more you need to make sure you get more market share and you top more than your competitors. So by looking at some of their key competitors we are able to identify which traffic they are getting. For example, ‘Birmingham estate agent’, ‘buy my house online’, those types of phrases identify which ones were the most important to the competitor, use them for that particular estate agent, and then by using PPC on a low key basis, be able to identify how they are performing in that environment versus the competition. And what is interesting, over the six month period, to date, that we have done it is that, as we have dominated more and more the competitors – who tend to be more national – have dropped off, they have not stopped what they are doing, but they have stopped competing in this particular area which is an interesting slant and it means that this particular client, online, is dominating Birmingham extremely well. As a result, they get more instructions which is the key driver of the business. The key take-aways from this section are that you can understand very quickly what works and what doesn’t work, online, by looking at your competitors’ strategies and if you are a local based company that is even easier. So locally, understand who dominates and why, or nationally, understand who dominates and why. Go and have a look at their traffic, have a look at their online presence, what they do, their social media presence and use, or employ someone, who has the tools available to really give you some answers as to what they are doing so you can then make a judgement call as to whether you want to steal some of their traffic or whether you have got your own strategy which you want to pursue. Having knowledge about competitor analytics can help you get a head start on your marketing strategies. There are multiple competitor analysis tools available but Similarweb is one of my favorites. Because it gives a significant amount of information for Free. With Similarweb you can keep tabs on your competition and see where the site traffic is coming from and how many websites hits they are getting per month. You can also check out various social media traffic sources and use to create your marketing strategies. But one of my fav thing about this tool is that it enables me to see which country my competition is getting traffic from. So, if I see a particular country that I am not targeting with my ads but my competition is getting traffic, I would start runnings ads targeting audience in that country. FYI, I have no affiliation with this tool but wanted to share with my audience because I use SimilarWeb a lot and it's been very beneficial for me.

Now we are looking at a company called adwordsprofessionals.net which we can apply this competitive intelligence to and it could be any industry, it doesn't matter what it is I just happened to have chosen Google Adwords. So here we can see the 3 adverts that they're using the most and they're clearly targeting professional website design You can see the copy used and you can see down here the keyword phrases that they're targeting. They are on the position 10 on page 1 of Adwords, there position 8 for that and position 18 on page 3 for web design Sydney. Interesting that a Google Adwords company is advertising web design and yet performing very poorly. Basically on Adwords there's a total of 55, 54 and 20 adverts, this is how many actual pages are in the Google search results and these are the dates when the information was found, interesting information It also shows you the the top landing page, which again is strange knowing what I know, that they would be targeting their homepage. You need to be targeting internal pages that are very specific. So they don't really seem to know what they're doing here in my personal opinion. These are the 10 competitors basically that are competing the most with them and they are using similar keyword phrases which is what it means by overlapping keywords. This is just one example of an Adwords competitive review and then we look at also Australia which is gonna be pretty much the same because clearly they are I think based on the Gold coast somewhere.
