Digital HR: Using Digital Tools to Unlock HR's True Potential

The Human Resource (HR) function is at the center of sweeping changes. Digital technologies are radically impacting the manner in which employees and prospects connect and communicate with organizations. Barring a few exceptions, however, HR functions in most organizations continue to stay rooted in traditional modes of engagement. For instance, almost 75% of the organizations in our annual survey of HR leaders still rely on traditional recruiting and branding techniques. It's time for HR to move into the fast lane, moving from acknowledging the impact of digital to taking concrete steps to make it an integral part of its operational processes. Not least because your employees are not hanging around. They are reinventing and equipping themselves with new-era digital tools, and it is imperative for HR to match them step-for-step. Otherwise, employees will disappear off into the distance, leaving a forlorn HR stalled on the starting grid.

To be bold, implementing digital marketing strategies could be game-changing for HR departments. And there is a ton of low-hanging fruit - quick results, as well as long-term gain. After two decades in HR (training, career development, OD) I became preoccupied with digital marketing, and for the last few years I've pursued it as a career (and last year launched my own digital agency), But I can't stop thinking about HR (it's a disease!). The more I learn about digital strategies the more I can see how they could apply to HR initiatives and make a huge difference - in recruitment, engagement, productivity, etc. First, these strategies can be used to help HR market itself! My position on this is pretty simple, that HR tends to suck at marketing (not to be too harsh, but it's never been our strong suit). And there are some technologies and proven practices that are commonly used in digital marketing that could benefit HR in terms of their own promotion. But these same technologies can help HR fulfill its mission by improving results in key initiatives, and by providing more value, they will also have more to promote. It's a virtuous circle. So I made this video where I just talk (perhaps a bit too much) about some specific ways to leverage emerging digital strategies to support HR initiatives (and therefore core business initiatives). Under the slogan ‘Meet the future’, the conference, which was organised by HRC International Group with SEAT as the main partner, served as the annual meeting point to talk about current trends, pool the best practices and reflect on the future of human resources. SEAT President Luca de Meo opened the conference with a keynote speech on the necessity of giving special consideration to employment in the current context, where the impact of technology is gaining in importance. De Meo emphasised that “human resources could play a key role: helping leaders and organisations adapt to technology, helping people to adapt to new models of work and careers paths, and encourage changes in society, regulation and public policy”. De Meo underlined that the ongoing challenge facing human resources professionals is to the ability to detect change and rely on internal talent in order to achieve social and economic success. The President of SEAT pointed out that “humans are adaptable, and given the need to address the emerging challenges of the digitalisation that is transforming society and business, it is crucial that we provide continuous training in order for individuals to learn marketable new skills. With this solution we can transform people from the inside, and leadership will have to transform from an organisation ‘doing’ digital things to one that is ‘becoming’ digital. Digital transformation and human resources Following the speech by the President of SEAT, a round table was held to discuss digital transformation, its impact on human resources and the challenges that arise for the managers of these departments. Participants at the debate included SEAT Vice-president for Human Resources Xavier Ros and executives from EF Education First, Seeliger & Conde, Amrop, Meliá Hotels International, ManpowerGroup and Universum Global. Xavier Ros discussed the importance of digital transformation in every company, and especially in the automotive industry, “as it simultaneously includes three focus areas: technology, business model and the way of relating with customers.” During his address, the Vice-president of SEAT expressed the main challenges to attract digital talent to the automotive industry and analysed some of the strategies when it comes to recruitment and retention of digital talent. Ros also emphasised some of the projects that SEAT has implemented in order to tackle these challenges, such as “DisrUp, a meeting where young talents that develop knowledge about the future of mobility and propose solutions designed by and for the user.”
