In reality, the purpose of business analysis can be anything from mindlessly scribbling down “requirements” to predicting the future of the known universe. Although often married to IT (Information Technology), business analysis is a fundamental business process regardless which organizational unit performs it. Because it defines the interface between people and technology, it is by nature complex. Based on experience gained in working with hundreds of organizations of various sizes world-wide, we identify distinct differences in business analysis as practiced at three levels. In a nutshell, Strategic Business Analysis identifies opportunities for improvement. Tactical Business Analysis flushes out the details of defined projects or initiatives. Operational Business Analysis deals with the evolving daily changes in the life of any change process. Defined thusly, these could be three different careers although they share a great deal of common techniques. Transcript: What is a BA? The BA is both a position, a business analysis position, or a job function. An actual work function that folks do, specifically SDLC professionals. Whether you're a tester, product manager, project manager or a developer there are business analysis responsibilities that you have if there isn't a BA on the specific project. At a very very high level, a BA is a great translator. They translate business needs into technical requirements. They make sure those technical requirements match the goals of the business and create value very quickly. Think about it from a product manager perspective. A product manager focuses on external products -- products that go to market. They're looking at quality, ROI and needs. A BA is very similar except that they're looking at internal solutions, services and systems. They're looking at quality, ROI and value from the internal systems. Their customers are the business professionals within the business. Whereas a product managers customers are those external people buying a solution. As you dig into BA position more, you have to think about requirements. A requirement. is a protocol, rule, or specific engagement point that should happen for something to work right. The language has to be very specific as well. It's about details and being specific. So a business requirement is a high level, detailed understanding of what is supposed to be accomplished. From there you have functional requirements. One of the functional requirements would be from a person to a system in order to make that business requirement to happen. You might have a new CRM system and the salesperson needs to engage that CRM system differently in order to achieve that business requirement. That's a functional requirement. A human being engaging with a system to make a specific outcome happen. Finally you have a system requirement. A system requirement, or a non-functional requirement, is a system-to-system situation where a computer or a database or a network is communication back and forth. You can understand the need for precision there in order for that execution to occur. Next you have to start thinking about "why". Why is this important? First off is competitive advantage. The commoditization of IT means that IT is everywhere, it's ubiquitous. So it's not the plumbing that's important, it's the services on top of that plumbing which are critical. The BA drives those services into organizations and ensures those services are built correctly so that a company can achieve competitive advantage from the commoditized plumbing that already exists. Second, it's all about outsourcing. Outsourcing saves organizations money, but to what detriment. The BA helps control the externality that outsourcing provides the organization by controlling the cultural issues, time frame issues and language barriers that outsourcing causes. As you start thinking about the BA position you have to start thinking about standardizations and scaling. The IIBA, the International Institute of Business Analysis, is the standard body for the BA position. It offers a body of knowledge, which is currently in the 2.0 version, moving to 3.0 by the end of 2013, and has scaled internationally to have hundreds of chapters where BAs can work together locally to continue to build out the value and importance of that job position. Business analysis is a research discipline of identifying business needs and determining solutions to business problems. Solutions often include a software-systems development component, but may also consist of process improvement, organizational change or strategic planning and policy development. The person who carries out this task is called a business analyst or BA. Business analysts do not work solely on developing software systems. Those who attempt to do so run the risk of developing an incomplete solution. Although there are different role definitions, depending upon the organization, there does seem to be an area of common ground where most business analysts work. The responsibilities appear to be: To investigate business systems, taking an holistic view of the situation. This may include examining elements of the organisation structures and staff development issues as well as current processes and IT systems. To evaluate actions to improve the operation of a business system. Again, this may require an examination of organisational structure and staff development needs, to ensure that they are in line with any proposed process redesign and IT system development. To document the business requirements for the IT system support using appropriate documentation standards. In line with this, the core business analyst role could be defined as an internal consultancy role that has the responsibility for investigating business situations, identifying and evaluating options for improving business systems, defining requirements and ensuring the effective use of information systems in meeting the needs of the business. SAP SE (Systems, Applications & Products in Data Processing) is a German multinational software corporation that makes enterprise software to manage business operations and customer relations. SAP is headquartered in Walldorf, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, with regional offices in 130 countries.The company has over 293,500 customers in 190 countries. In 1973, the first commercial product was launched. It was called SAP R/98 and offered a common system for multiple tasks. This permitted the use of a centralized data storage, improving the maintenance of data. From a technical point of view, therefore, a database was necessary.
