Now just because a class is for beginners, doesn't mean it isn't challenging! We are going to work on building foundational strength, balance and flexibility. We'll begin with a very short meditation to be grounded and then warming up the spine with some fluid motions. We'll then move to hands and knees and start to engage the abdominals which is key when it comes to improving balance. Our flows will take you through a Warrior sequence where we focus on alignment and breath to do the poses safely and effectively. Without Yama there is no yoga, it is the first step in the journey of knowing. But what exactly is Yama? Defined as the ethical precepts set forth in the yoga sutras, is encompasses the first and second set of the eight limbs that form the foundation for spiritual progress along the path to enlightenment. Through stories and personal experience Sri Dharma Mittra explains how a life based on this foundational limb of yoga, Yama, that encompasses compassion, truthfulness, non-stealing, moderation and non-hoarding can help you achieve a more successful life and a deeper understanding in your practice. Sri Dharma Mittra first encountered yoga as a teenager before meeting his Guru, Sri Swami Kailashananda. Under his mentorship he became well versed in both Ashtanga and Karma Yoga before finally finding his calling as a Sannyasi, one who renounces the world in order to better deepen their relationship with God. Sri Dharma founded one of the early independent schools of yoga in New York City in 1975 and has taught hundreds of thousands of people the world over in the years since. Our ideal is when every person with zero knowledge of yoga could immediately without prior preparation start the course. The fact that we try to present all the materials in a clear way, does not mean that we might not present the same knowledge in a formal, difficult to understand form, available only to those who have been studying yoga and is familiar with the relevant terminology. Simply, we believe, that it is inefficient at the moment when the number of people, capable of such an approach, is negligible. We believe that in today's world, a lack of basic understanding of yoga is the most serious and intractable problem. At the same time, the relatively simple and understandable language sometimes causes harmful illusion by students, that they don't need to focus their attention and seriously work over the course material, and they just read it as entertainment literature or sometimes as exciting detective stories. Such an attitude to learning is extremely unproductive and can hardly lead a man to better understanding of yoga.
