Resin rebar is pretty typical ground support in non-corrosive mines. Uses a fast set resin in the toe (45-60sec) then when spun again the tensioning nut breaks a shear pin and puts the rebar in tension and thus the rock in compression. The slow set resin in the hole will set over time and give great strength but less yield as the rebar is no long acting as a point anchor. Enjoy!

This is where the jumbo operator has finished scaling the heading to remove most of the loose rocks. He then manipulates sheets of mesh, 2.4m wide and up to 5m long, into position with the jumbo's boom(s). He then drills holes and 'bolts' (pins) the mesh onto the rock surface with a variety of 'rock bolts', measuring from 900mm long, to 3000mm long (generally about 47mm thick). My job is to train him how to do this, especially when using different and new bolts, that he might not be familiar with. This guy is an artist. No names, as we are not discussing which mine it is. I wrote him a nice report for his boss!

The Australian Centre for Geomechanics (ACG) has developed this geotechnical hazard awareness training DVD for underground metalliferous mine workers. To purchase this product or find out more information, visit http://www.acg.uwa.edu.au/shop#trainprods Overview Geotechnical risks in underground metalliferous mining can be associated with all facets of mining activities including: scaling, installing services, loading and hauling, development, stoping and ground support installation. These risks can lead to serious consequences ranging from production and equipment loss to severe injuries and fatalities. Good risk management implies that the hazards are well understood by all employees that may be exposed to them. A sound understanding of ground control concepts is fundamental to enable mine workers to identify geotechnical hazards, take appropriate actions and ensure their own safety. No matter how good the systems in place may be, the first line of defense against accidents is the capable, knowledge-based judgement that each individual mine worker demonstrates.

This abandoned copper mine is one we wanted to visit because we have seen explorers visit the main adit (including Adit Addicts, my exploring buddy for the day), but had never seen that anyone had documented the numerous upper adits of this particular mine. The main section of the mine is quite impressive and it is certainly understandable why explorers focus on it (I cover the ground level as well so that you can have a sense of it too in case this is your first time seeing this mine). In the interest of completeness though, we wanted to cover all that there was to see here. Also, the overlooked abandoned mines or even the overlooked sections of abandoned mines often yield the best historical treasures. I’ll discuss the guts of this mine in more detail when I get to the main section in the next video, but, as I mentioned above, this was a copper mine and, from what we could tell, all of the production took place around the turn of the last century (the 1900s). Apparently, the mine was only active for several years, but they certainly made the most of that time. Although I just explore the ground level in the main section of the mine (in the next video), I will link to other explorers that have visited all of the levels in the main mine so that you can see what it looks like. Teamwork between mine explorers will get all of these old mines explored and documented! The YouTube channel for Adit Addicts can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIXOU8aR7o50X6q2wQ0wbCQ ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference… You can click here for the full playlist of abandoned mines: https://goo.gl/TEKq9L Thanks for watching! ***** Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well. These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that niche of our history is gone forever. But, you know what? We enjoy doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a century, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born. So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures! #ExploringAbandonedMines #MineExploring #AbandonedMines #UndergroundMineExploring

Prosesing Drilling, Charging, Blasting, Support and Spraying. TERIMAKASIH.

Pics I have scanned from my photos which have turned out quite well I thought. From when I worked underground 1968 - 1981. The first part is Windarra nickel mine, 212 miles north of Kalgoorlie Western Australia. This was a trackless decline with some pretty big gear, 35 ton Wigmore Caterpillar trucks which were a modified 631 scraper with a tipping body, and 3-boom Gardner Denver pneumatic jumbos. They had open stopes with longholes drilled with GD Airtracs and some bar-and-arm machines. From memory I think one of the big stope blasts was 100,000 tons. The mine closed in the early '80s and was gutted. There were a few deaths down there, all rockfalls, all on my shift, so R.I.P. to those guys. The second part is Lake View & Star gold mine, on Kalgoorlie-Boulder's Golden Mile. I worked there as a machine miner on airlegs doing shrink stoping and intermediate driving (drifting). We worked by ourselves with no partner which was the practise then. We used Holman's Silver 3s and Silver 900 airleg machines (jacklegs). Mucking out inter drives we used air or electric 2-drum scrapers into a raise. We used AN60 dynamite primers with ANFO and electric detonators or sometimes safety fuse. This was a "traditional" mine with rail drives leading to a vertical shaft about 3000' deep from memory. The mines on the Golden Mile no longer exist because they have been swallowed up by the Super Pit.
