Historical (and some Hysterical) Flat Earth Newspaper Articles (#4) gathered by Dean Hawk

11:52
This is the fourth in a series of old newspaper articles unearthed by Dean Hawk youtube channel. Dean discovered these gems after first hearing about flat earth. He went to his local library to research and found over a hundred articles and passed them on to be read aloud and shared. Fascinating to see how the globe theory was challenged and ridiculed and disbelieved by many people right up until very recently. This one shows Samuel Shentons' (IFERS) frustration at the lack of interest in this reappraisal of science for peoples fear of ridicule. It mentions both political leaders of England enthusiastically mocking the idea... reminds me of President Obamas' recent four attempts to ridicule the idea written into his speeches. History repeats

The Brothers Gracchi - How Republics Fall - Extra History - #1

08:28
Rome had doubled the size of its empire in a single generation, but such expansion came at great cost. The wars enriched the wealthy and impoverished the soldiers who fought in them. Into these turbulent times came a talented and well-connected young man named Tiberius Gracchus, who soon learned the power of appealing to the populace over the elite. It now stretched from Spain to Greece, with holdings in Africa, and showed no signs of stopping. At home, this growth destabilized the entire economy. Slaves from captured lands became field workers for the wealthy. Common soldiers who used to own land could no longer tend it during the long campaigns, and returned to find themselves either bankrupt or forced to sell to the large slave-owning elites. Now these displaced landowners flooded Rome looking for work, but many of them remained unemployed or underemployed. In the midst of this, two boys named Tiberius and Gaius were born to the Gracchus family. They were plebeians, but of the most distinguished order. Their mother, Cornelia, was the daughter of Scipio Africanus. Their father was a two-time consul who'd celebrated two triumphs for winning great campaigns. But their father died early, so Cornelia raised her children alone and made sure they had a firm grounding in the liberal arts. As soon as he could, the elder boy, Tiberius, ran for office as a military tribune and joined the final campaign against Carthage. There he earned great honor for himself, and learned from the Scipio Aemilianus, his half-brother who also happened to be the leading general. Upon return to Rome, he ran for quaeastor and was sent to serve in the Numantian Wars in Spain. This time, the general he served under was struggling and suffered defeat after defeat. At the end, he tried to flee, only to be captured by the Numantians along with the entire army. The Numantians insisted on discussing surrender terms with Tiberius Gracchus, whose father had long ago earned their respect, and he successfully negotiated the release of 20,000 captured soldiers. In Rome, however, the elites looked on his treaty with scorn: they felt his surrender made Rome look weak. The families of the soldiers had a far different perspective: they celebrated Tiberius, and even saved him from punishment at the hands of the Senate. He had learned that power could be found in appealing to the people. ____________ ♪ Get the intro music here! http://bit.ly/1EQA5N7 *Music by Demetori: http://bit.ly/1AaJG4H ♪ Get the outro music here! http://bit.ly/23isQfx *Music by Sean and Dean Kiner: http://bit.ly/1WdBhnm

Historical (and some Hysterical) Flat Earth Newspaper Articles (#3) gathered by Dean Hawk

09:36
This is the third in a series of old newspaper articles unearthed by Dean Hawk youtube channel. Dean discovered these gems after first hearing about flat earth. He went to his local library to research and found over a hundred articles and passed them on to be read aloud and shared. Fascinating to see how the globe theory was challenged and ridiculed and disbelieved by many people right up until very recently. This article is from The Birmingham Post, October 24th, 1966 and shows the way the media is really telling the masses how to think, what to think, in preparation for their massive moon landing hoax propaganda in planning, just three years away. It shows Samuel Shenton, then leader of the original IFERS (International Flat Earth Research Society, currently re-established by Eric Dubay) as a kind man, gentle with his encouragement of researchers- "those with eyes to see", "dont pack up after getting stuck on one point". It included notes of supporters, one from The Court of Common Council From the City Of London, one from the missile section of a large American Corporation (who shall remain nameless) who wanted to know more in case he needed help to "subdue the public, should the theory be revealed as fact", and one concerned citizen living near Cape Kennedy who wanted to further the revelation of the flat earth from "within the enemies lines " Also interesting George Bernard Shaw is shown as a supporter of the inquisition, who then gives a distracting unscientifically supported idea of earth being a "cylinder". Hmmm ...early trolling I wonder?

Flat Earth-Historical (and some Hysterical) Newspaper Articles (#1) gathered by Dean Hawk

05:01
This is the first in a series of old newspaper articles unearthed by Dean Hawk youtube channel. Dean discovered these gems after first hearing about flat earth. He went to his local library to research and found over a hundred articles and passed them on to be read aloud and shared. Fascinating to see how the globe theory was challenged and ridiculed and disbelieved by many people right up until very recently. This article (1) was from The Evening Telegraph, (UK?) Monday 21st November 1921. It is about how Flat Earth and Geocentrism was being taught in high schools in Zion, Illinois, U.S.A by order of the state board of education, overseen by it's president by Mr Wilbur Glenn Voliva. Also the school principal, Miss Mary Thompson, and Miss Eva Baker, Geography teacher. It disputes gravity (calling it unnecessary - "and unnecessary things don't exist"), questions the lengths of the tropics, and the distance and size of the sun. I found it interesting that in 1921 the sun was officially held at 91 million miles away, whereas now it is adamantly theorised at 93 million. My favourite line -"Both teachers say that their students grasp the theory of the flat world readily, and accept the theory because it appears to them as rational." Sorry it appears unreadable when I rewatch I will try and bump up the size more in future articles, email me if you want a copy [email protected] Thanks for watching

Constitutional Compromises: Crash Course Government and Politics #5

08:57
In which Craig Benzine teaches you about the compromises met in ratifying the U.S. Constitution. The United State’s didn’t always have its current system of government. Actually, this is it’s second attempt. Craig will delve into the failures (and few successes) of the Articles of Confederation, tell you how delegates settled on a two-house system of representation, discuss the issues of slavery and population that have been imbedded into our constitution, and fire up the clone machine to discuss how federalists and anti-federalist opposition provided the U.S. a Bill of Rights. And who knows, maybe all this talk of compromise will even inspire Craig and eagle to find some middle ground. This is the second in a series of old newspaper articles unearthed by Dean Hawk youtube channel. Dean discovered these gems after first hearing about flat earth. He went to his local library to research and found over a hundred articles and passed them on to be read aloud and shared. Fascinating to see how the globe theory was challenged and ridiculed and disbelieved by people right up until very recently. This article (2) was from The Hampshire Telegraph, (UK?) Saturday 28th March 1896. This one is very funny, it describes a welcome flat earth lecture in Landport from a Mr. Ebenezer Breach, a rowdy and lively audience cheering and demonstrating their love for his efforts. It mentions how there was a riot at the previous lecture in Portsmouth, AND someone came along this evening and let off some chemical stench (like rotten eggs- or maybe potatoes??? ; ) which made some of the audience have to get up and leave. The collapse of Venezuela, explained

07:31
The country is in chaos, but its leaders aren't going anywhere. Correction at 1:58: It’s been brought to our notice that the Supreme Court tried to strip the country’s National Assembly of its powers in March 2017 and not 2016. We regret the error. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Venezuela was once the richest country in Latin America. It has the largest known oil reserves in the world and its democratic government was once praised world wide. But today, Venezuela’s democratic institutions and its economy are in shambles. The country has the highest inflation in the world, making food and medicine inaccessible to most Venezuelans. Over the last four years, its GDP has fallen 35%, which is a sharper drop than the one seen during the Great Depression in the US. The country’s murder rate has surpassed that of the most dangerous cities in the world. These conditions have sparked months of protests against the president, Nicolas Maduro. And it’s easy to see why: the country has become measurably worse since his election in 2013. The Truth About the Titanic Has Been Revealed

11:03
Recent findings reveal the truth that has been buried for over one hundred years. Scientists have debunked the theory that the cause of the Titanic sinking was an iceberg. Why did Titanic sink? What's the real cause of the Titanic crash? HOW TITANIC SANK On April 14th, 1912 at 11:40 p.m. RMS Titanic had a terrible accident that led to its ultimate demise 3 hours later. By 2:20 a.m. in the early morning of April 15th, the biggest ship of its time had completely disappeared under the ice-cold surface of the Atlantic Ocean. The Titanic took more than 1,500 lives with it as it sank to its watery grave. TITANIC MYSTERY The cause of this horrible disaster leading to so many deaths was an iceberg the ship crashed into. Or so we’ve always been told... But scientists’ most recent findings have debunked this theory. In this video, we’ll tell you the whole truth that has been buried for over one hundred years. TIMESTAMPS How Titanic sank 0:08 How Titanic was made 1:00 The real cause of the catastrophe 3:04 The interior of the Titanic 5:10 Another tragic coincidence 6:20 Another criminal negligence: the lifeboats 7:23 Some people also blame Captain Smith 8:25 HOW TITANIC WAS MADE The Titanic had 4 massive smokestacks. Each of them weighed 60 tons, and they extended 81.5 feet above the deck. Such an impressive height was necessary to avoid covering the passengers in 100 tons of soot blown off daily. The smokestacks were placed at a 30° angle to look even more astonishing and imposing. No less awe-inspiring was the cost of the ship. Its construction demanded $7,500,000. If we take into account modern exchange rates and inflation, in 2016 they would be paying $166,000,000. Surprisingly, it would turn out cheaper than the production of the world-famous movie Titanic in 1997, which cost $200,000,000! Criminal negligence, tragic and unfortunate chain of coincidences, fire or ice: whatever it was, it took the lives of hundreds of people and still keeps the minds of scientists busy to this day. Separation of Powers and Checks and Balances: Crash Course Government and Politics #3

08:31
In which Craig Benzine teaches you about the US Governments Separation of powers and the system of checks and balances. In theory, the Legislative Branch, the Executive Branch, and the Judicial Brach are designed to keep each other in check, and to keep any branch from becoming too powerful. In reality, the system was designed to keep the president from becoming some kind of autocrat. For the most part, it has worked. Craig will call in the clones to explain which powers belong to which branches, and to reveal some secret perks that the Supreme Court justices enjoy. Also, if you can afford to pay a little every month, it really helps keep the channel producing great content. In which John Green teaches you about the Progressive Era in the United States. In the late 19th and early 20th century in America, there was a sense that things could be improved upon. A sense that reforms should be enacted. A sense that progress should be made. As a result, we got the Progressive Era, which has very little to do with automobile insurance, but a little to do with automobiles. All this overlapped with the Gilded Age, and is a little confusing, but here we have it. Basically, people were trying to solve some of the social problems that came with the benefits of industrial capitalism. To oversimplify, there was a competition between the corporations' desire to keep wages low and workers' desire to have a decent life. Improving food safety, reducing child labor, and unions were all on the agenda in the Progressive Era. While progress was being made, and people were becoming more free, these gains were not equally distributed. Jim Crow laws were put in place in the south, and immigrant rights were restricted as well. So once again on Crash Course, things aren't so simple. Hey teachers and students - Check out CommonLit's free collection of reading passages and curriculum resources to learn more about the events of this episode. The Progressive Era was marked by rapid reactions to the Gilded Age: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/the-progressive-era Literature such as The Jungle revealed the horrifying conditions of factory industries, one of several which were overhauled with new progressive regulations: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/excerpt-from-the-jungle

A history of the Kashmir conflict | The Economist

02:39
In 1947 Britain prepared to end nearly a century of rule over the Indian subcontinent and its 390 million people. Hindus were concentrated in central and southern India, Muslims in Bengal in the northwest. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: https://econ.st/2GgNrtt A British Commission divided the territory into majority Muslim Pakistan and majority Hindu India. In the chaos that followed partition, 15 million people fled across the new borders and 500,000 died in rioting. Four border regions saw the worst of it: Sindh, Bengal, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir. Among India's 565 princely states only Jammu and Kashmir had a Hindu Maharajah ruling over a majority Muslim population. India claimed the Maharaja decided to join India. Pakistan disputed this. In October Pashtuns from Pakistan's Northwest Frontier Province invaded Kashmir with the support of Pakistan's government. In October of 1947 the Maharaja left Srinagar. Indian troops were airlifted in but were ill-prepared for the cold and altitude. Pakistan responded with its own campaign and India approached the United Nations to broker a ceasefire which went into effect on January 1st 1949, establishing a line of control but no final border. In 1962 China attacked India in the Aksai Chin region of Kashmir easily defeating India's poorly equipped Himalayan troops. China retains control of the Aksai Chin today. Three years later encouraged by China's success Pakistan sent troops across the line of control dressed as Kashmiri locals - the fighting proved brief and inconclusive. On September 22nd both sides agreed to a un-backed ceasefire. Another brief war broke out over East Pakistan in 1971 - this one conclusive. East Pakistan seceded. Ten million refugees streamed into West Bengal and, with India's help, Bangladesh was born. In 1999 after both India and Pakistan had successfully tested nuclear weapons, full-scale war was barely avoided when Pakistan tried to seize the cargill region of indian-controlled Kashmir. At one time an average of one Pakistani soldier every four days and one Indian soldier every other day died at the Siachen glacier and the terrorist attacks in Mumbai in November 2008 were reportedly planned by senior members of lashkar-e-taiba, which Pakistan created to fight Indian domination of Kashmir and which India accuses of terrorist atrocities all over India. The conflict simmers in 2007, 777 people were killed in violence in Jammu and Kashmir bringing the two decade total above 47,000 by India's official count. according to some Kashmiris the total is twice that number. How U.S. Involvement In Central America Led To a Border Crisis| AJ+

12:36
Thousands of Central American refugees and migrants have been coming to the Mexico-U.S. border for almost 40 years – and in spring of 2018, the Trump administration enacted a “zero-tolerance” policy that led to the arrest of any and all refugees and migrants attempting to cross the border into the United States. The most controversial aspect of the policy's enforcement was the forced separation of parents from their children. While much of the conversation has focused on Central Americans escaping violence, there hasn't been much on why there's so much violence in the region to begin with. The story? Almost 200 years of U.S. intervention. EDIT: We messed up on certain map animations, excluding the nation of Belize - it was unintentional. Thanks to everyone who highlighted this to us. The people there shared languages, cultures, and a love of navigation. Spread thousands of miles across the open ocean the Polynesians are history's greatest navigators. But could they have discovered the Americas before Columbus? And how is the second most beautiful thing on Earth, the potato, a key to this story? Let's find out. In this video, we'll look at Polynesian history, Polynesian Navigation, Polynesian boat building, and all things Polynesian.
