10 English Idioms from Technology

13:19
Does your language have idioms that come from technology? We use technology in so many parts of our daily life, so it's natural that many English expressions have come from this field. Learn these idioms to make your English sound more fluent and natural. This lesson has all the bells and whistles. If you don't know what that means yet, there's no need to hit the panic button -- I'll show you what makes this English tick. TAKE THE QUIZ: https://www.engvid.com/10-english-idioms-technology/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. Welcome to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. In today's video we're going to look at idioms, but idioms from the world of technology, so very specific idioms. I'm going to give you ten of them. I got five here and we'll have five more coming in a moment. Now, before I begin, what is an idiom? An idiom is an expression or a collection of words that the words themselves don't necessarily mean what the expression combined means. Right? So you have the words and you know all the words, but when they're put together in this expression the meaning could be completely different. So all of these come from technology because they started about an actual technological tool, or piece of equipment, or innovation and we took this expression and we applied it to other things. So we're going to start with: "grease the wheels". Now, if you think about machines, they have these kinds of wheels, they're called gears or sometimes they're called cogs, the cogs... A cog in the machine. And a machine might have many of these wheels, and the wheels sort of work together. Now, the machines are most... Sorry, the wheels are mostly made from metal. And if you know from experience probably, if metal touches metal too much it heats up. Now, if it gets too hot then the two wheels will seize on top of each other. They will seize, it means they will catch each other and stop working. So, to prevent that seizure we put grease on the wheels. Grease is like a thick oil. Right? You put it all around, you make everything sort of lubricated... Okay? Oops. Lubricate means you make it so it doesn't heat up and doesn't create friction. Lots of new words for you, here. Friction is that heat that comes from the touching each other too much. So grease the wheels so they don't touch, but how do we use this idiom in everyday life? Well, if you think about bureaucracy, like government, you need to get a permit to change something in your building, for example. Now, in some countries to get this permit will take you months. You have to go to this office and sign the paperwork, take this paperwork to that office, get it stamped, take it to that office, back and forth - you can be spending months and doing lots of work just to get a simple permit. So, what you might do, you'll go to your politician friend and, you know, ask him to, if he can grease the wheels a little bit, make the process easier. You'll give him a little bit of cash, he'll give you all the stamps you need, you'll get your permit in a week, you build your building, everybody's happy. "Grease the wheels". So most commonly it's used to basically mean like a bribe, but it doesn't have to be a bribe. It could just ask somebody to make things a little bit easier, make a process a little bit smoother. Okay? "Bells and whistles", ding, ding, ding. [Whistles] Right? So bells and whistles. If you're talking about bells and whistles on something, you're talking about all the features, especially you're talking about the cool, the good features. Right? So if you buy a car, you go to the dealership and you say to the guy: "I want this car with all the bells and whistles", it means I want every feature that's available; I want the stereo, I want the air conditioning, I want the automatic, I want the GPS, the mirror, the rear-view camera. I want everything that is available put into this car. I want all the bells and whistles. Okay? So basically all of the good stuff. If you go to an appliance store, you want the machine that has the most bells and whistles, the most cool features that you can put on it. Again, this is from old time, industrial machines worked on steam, so the steam created the whistle and then the bells for when a protest was done, etc. "Hit the panic button", so in a factory that has a lot of machinery, if somebody gets caught in the machine, like let's say your shirt gets caught in the belt and you start getting dragged, all over the factory there's a button that you can press it and all the machines stop. That's called the panic button. Okay? So, when there's a dangerous situation or emergency, you just hit the panic button, everything shuts down, you go save your friend from the machine. We use this in everyday conversation. Basically we say: "Don't hit the panic button just yet", maybe, or: "He hit the panic button." It basically means to panic, to be really nervous, really scared, really worried about something.
13 Uses of 'THE' - Articles (a, an, the) - Lesson 2 - English Grammar

13:03
In this lesson, you will learn the 13 USES of THE. Also see - MOST COMMON MISTAKES IN ENGLISH & HOW TO AVOID THEM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Dax90QyXgI&list=PLmwr9polMHwsR35rD9spEhjFUFa7QblF9 For more FREE English lessons, SUBSCRIBE to this channel. Transcript: Welcome back. This is lesson two of my series on articles. If you haven’t seen the first lesson, you will find the link to the full playlist below. Alright, in this lesson, I will show you 13 uses of the definite article – ‘the’. As always, there’s a quiz at the end to test your understanding. Use number one is something we discussed in the previous lesson. This is also the most important use. Use 'the' to talk about a person or thing known to your listener. For example, "Julie has a nine-year-old son. The boy wants to be an astronaut." Here, I first say 'a nine-year old son' because you don't know him yet. But once I have introduced him in the sentence, I then say 'The boy' because he is now known to you. Here's another example: "Can you answer the phone?" If I say this to you, then there's probably a phone ringing somewhere. So the phone is already known to you, and I say 'the phone'. And finally, "This is the watch that my sister gave me for my birthday." This example is a little different because if I stop with "This is the watch" - you will be confused because you don't know the watch. But then if I give you more information about the watch - it's the watch that my sister gave me for my birthday - so that way it becomes known to you. Let's now move on to use number two: use 'the' with unique things – that is, where there is only one of something. For example, we say ‘the sun’ (because there’s only one sun). Similarly, ‘the moon’, ‘the sky’, ‘the world’, ‘the universe’ and so on. Here are a couple of sentences: "Everyone knows that the sun rises in the east." and "Rahul has traveled all over the world." Some other things we consider unique are ‘the government’, 'the police', 'the Internet' and so on. As in these sentences: “The police are investigating a murder in our neighborhood.” and “Almost everybody uses the Internet today.” OK the next use is with some words referring to nature or the environment in a general way. These are words such as the countryside (which means rural or village areas), the town, the mountains, the weather etc. For example, "My son enjoys spending time in the countryside." It means my son likes to spend time relaxing in rural areas. Here are a couple more sentences: "We're going to take a trip to the mountains." and "I love the weather in Los Angeles." Use number four is talking about objects of common experience like in the expressions that you see on the screen. We say that these are objects of common experience because we all experience these in our lives. Have a look at this example: "I met an interesting man at the park yesterday." You may not know which park but it doesn't matter - the park is common experience. In the same way "Did you read the newspaper this morning?" I don't care which newspaper you read, I just want to know if read one today. Here's another example: "Darren likes to sing in the shower." We also use 'the ' with some types of media (including the word 'media' itself) and also forms of entertainment. For example, "I don't listen to the radio a lot these days." or “Pooja is at the movies with her friends." Note that 'at the movies' means at a movie theatre. But it's important to note that TV doesn't work this way. You can use 'the' with TV if you mean a television set. Like "Will you help me move the TV?" But if you mean television as a medium, then you say 'on TV' - as in "I saw a documentary on TV today." Not 'on the TV'. It's just a crazy rule in English. Let's move on to use number five now. Use 'the' with some time expressions. You see these on the screen - we always use 'the' in these expressions. For example, "Kids hate getting up early in the morning.", "A friend of mine got married the day before yesterday." and "We love to go swimming in the summer." We also say ‘the past’, ‘the present’ and ‘the future’ probably because there's only one past, present and future. Like in this sentence: "We must learn our lessons from the past and work towards the future." 'The' is also found in time expressions like ‘the eighteenth century’, 'the 1960s' (or simply 'the 60s') and so on. For example, "This house was built by my grandfather in the sixties." Now you have to be a little careful with time expressions because there are many that should be used without articles. You see some of these on the screen. We will discuss these more in the next lesson when we talk about where to use no article. The next use is superlative forms. These are expressions like ‘the best’, ‘the worst’, ‘the biggest’, ‘the smallest’ and so on.

Transcript: Many people are confused about the difference between phrases and clauses. Are these different grammar items or are they just two names for the same thing? That's what we're going to talk about in this video. Now before we start just remember: if you have any questions at all you just have to ask me in the comments section below and I will talk to you there. So in this lesson we're going to learn the difference between phrases and clauses. But first let's talk about how phrases and clauses are similar. They're similar in this way: both of these refer two groups of words that are meaningful. Look at these examples: near my home or Dexter won the bicycle race You can see that these are meaningful so one of them is afraid and the other is a clause OK so what's the difference between them? Well the difference is this: a clause is a group of words with a subject-verb combination so Dexter won the bicycle race is a clause because it has a subject - Dexter and a verb - won is the past tense of win so this is a clause. A phrase is a group of words without a subject-verb combination. So near my home is a phrase because there's no subject verb combination It's very simple but keep this important difference in mind - a clause has a subject-verb combination and a phrase does not. So now let me show you some more examples so that you can learn how to easily identify phrases and clauses Alright all the words that you see on the screen are phrases. You'll notice that in all of these there's no subject verb combination and these examples also show the most common types of phrases For example my two wonderful dogs is a phrase focusing on the noun dogs and the phrase the tallest building in the world focuses on the noun building so we say that these are noun phrases. What about couldn't go and will be working? Can you guess what type of phrases these are? These are verb phrases because they only have verbs in them. All of these words are verbs similarly we have the adjective phrases very friendly and afraid of the dark we say that these are adjective phrases because the focus is on friendly and afraid - the other words in these phrases are only helping the main words and the main words are adjectives. Really fast and much quicker are adverb phrases because the adverbs fast and quicker are the focus of these phrases and finally what about near the post office and on the 29th? Do you know? These are preposition phrases because each of these tells us about a place or about time using the prepositions near and on. These are the most common types of phrases that you will come across and once again remember these are phrases because they don't have a subject verb combination. So let's now look at some examples of clauses like I said a clause is just like a phrase - it's a group of words but a clause has a subject verb combination now in English there are many different kinds of causes but the two most important that you need to know about are independent and dependent clauses let's start with the independent clause this is simply a clause that can stand alone as a sentence. For example He ate dinner this is a clause because it has a subject - he - and a verb - ate - past tense of eat and it's independent because it can be a sentence on its own. So what's a dependent clause then? Well it's a clause that is it has a subject-verb combination but it cannot be a sentence by itself. For example When James got home is a dependent clause - it has a subject - James - and a verb - got - but if you think about it it's not a complete sentence because if I said when James got home you will ask okay then what? What happened? So you see the sentence isn't complete so this is a dependent clause.

Here are some more great body part idioms from EnglishAnyone.com! A Big Mouth To have or be a big mouth means to gossip or tell secrets you shouldn't. My little brother has such a big mouth. He told my mom about her surprise party. Cost An Arm And A Leg Something that costs an arm and a leg is very expensive. This idiom means that you have to sell your arm and leg to get something because it costs so much. My new car cost an arm and a leg, but I look great driving it! A No-brainer A no-brainer is a choice that is so easy you don't need to think about it. Because you don't need to think, you don't need to use your brain. Should I eat ice cream or shoot myself in the foot? Sounds like a no-brainer to me. Let Your Hair Down To let your hair down means to relax and get comfortable. Though this expression comes from women usually wearing their hair up to look more professional at offices, both men and women can let their hair down. After I finish work, I like to head to my favorite bar, let my hair down and enjoy my evening. In Over Your Head To be in over your head means to do something that is too difficult for you. This idea comes from being in water deep enough to cover your head. I told my friend that I would babysit her ten children, but soon realized that I was in over my head. The Upper Hand To have the upper hand means to be in control of, or have the power in, a situation. When the other chess player made a mistake, I gained the upper hand. In The Blink Of An EyeSomething that happens in the blink of an eye happens incredibly quickly. The thief stole my wallet and vanished in the blink of an eye. Like Pulling Teeth Something that is like pulling teeth is ridiculously difficult to do. My daughter will not eat her vegetables! Getting her to eat healthy food is like pulling teeth! Difference between - 'Clean out', 'Clean off', 'Clean up' & 'Clean away' - English Grammar Lesson

08:32
Learn to speak fluent English -- Accent Training, Correct Grammar usage, Idioms, Phrases and vocabulary with example sentences. Before Ceema explains the differences between "clean up", "clean out", etc. here's a warning: if you don't already know these phrases, it's a bad idea to learn them all at the same time. If you already know these expressions and you'd like to figure out exactly how they're different, Watch on! Spaces and messes When you talk about cleaning, you're talking about two different things: the space that you're cleaning the mess that's in that space You can use each form of "clean" to talk about either cleaning the space: eg. We need to clean up the living room. ORcleaning the mess that's there: eg. We need to clean up those dirty dishes. The different forms of 'clean' You "clean out" the inside of a space that has a large mess in it: clean out the refridgerator clean out your car clean out your desk You "clean off" a flat surface: clean off the counter clean off the whiteboard clean off your windshield You "clean up" a room or a larger area: clean up your bedroom clean up the city clean up after the concert clean up your hard drive "Clean away" is different from the others because you only use it to talk about the messy things that you're cleaning, not the space that those things are in: clean away the dishes clean away the mud clean away the broken branches 'Clean' by itself What about just using the word "clean" by itself? It usually means to clean the most obvious part of something. For example: clean the toilet This means to clean the inside of the toilet bowl. clean the floor This means to clean the surface of the floor. If using the word "clean" by itself would lead to any confusion, use one of the other phrases instead. For example, instead of saying "clean the cabinets", say: Can you clean out the cabinets? Or: Can you clean off the cabinets?
