The “Robin Hood of Science” continues to provide 60+ million scientific papers to anyone in the world for free at https://sci-hub.tw Subscribe to Dr. Greger’s free nutrition newsletter and get the Evidence-Based Eating Guide: A Healthy Living Resource from Dr. Greger and NutritionFacts.org. Sign up at https://www.nutritionfacts.org/healthkit. Sci-hub.io was shut down since I recorded this, but the site can currently be reached at https://sci-hub.tw/ and five other domains. Should that one get yanked too (can always see the updated active link list on the Sci-Hub Wikipedia page(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sci-Hub)). Links provided for educational purposes only—literally! But wait, isn’t illegal to download “pirated” papers? I explore the controversy in the thrilling conclusion of this two-part video series in Sci-Hub Opens Up a World of Knowledge (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/Sci-Hub-Opens-Up-a-World-of-Knowledge) up next. My research into Sci-Hub came from a whole webinar I did on research techniques, which was captured into an online Continuing Medical Education course through the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Check it out at How to be an Evidence-based Lifestyle Medicine Practitioner (https://www.lifestylemed.education/Course/view/624278). I’m hoping to have a whole series of courses coming soon—stay tuned! Have a question about this video? #1 Food to Eat BEFORE Bed

This 1-Day Diet RESETS Hormones (for people OVER-40 ONLY) http://gl12.net/ytbestfood REFERENCES: Protein & Metabolic Rate: Journal of American College Nutrition https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11838888 Protein, weight loss, and hunger: International Journal of Obesity https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4424378/ Protein & Thermic Effect: Journal of Nutrition & Metabolism https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC524030/ Protein & Muscle Loss: Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19927027/ Prebedtime protein increases skeletal muscle synthesis: Journal Nutrients https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27916799 Are you doing the keto diet? If so, pay close attention because inside this video, I'm going to uncover the number 1 food that people over 40 years old should eat in every single meal and should intentionally directly before bed. And, ironically, we're told to avoid eating this food on a keto diet. Now, I also want to share with you a brand new, innovative, 1-day hormone-resetting diet protocol that I created. Super excited to share this with you. You can learn about it by clicking or tapping the link around this video. It's specifically designed to reset the hormones that help people over 40 years old manage their weight, boost their metabolism, and fight the aging process. Now, when you go over to my website, you're going to see a couple dozen different studies so you know everything I'm talking about inside this video and over at my web page is backed up by real science. But let's first, let's talk about what this 1 particular food is that can help you get all these amazing benefits. I have several studies right in front of me here, research studies, showing that when you include protein in every single meal and you eat protein before bed, research shows that it can boost your metabolism. It can help you burn more calories. It eliminates hunger and cravings. We all know hunger and cravings are the death of any diet. And research shows it can help you more easily manage your weight. I mean, if you're boosting your metabolism, you're burning more calories, and you're eliminating your hunger and cravings, how much easier is it going to be to manage your weight? So make sure that you're including protein in every single meal and eating a high-quality protein right before bed. Now, the key is is understanding how to time your protein the right way and how to combine it the right way. This is what's going to help you reset your hormones. And that's what I teach you how to do inside my system over at my website. But the first positive benefit the research shows that protein has by eating it in every meal, it's called diet-induced thermogenesis, DIT. And this is just a number that they attach to food that basically shows how many calories your body will burn when it digests a macronutrient. Now, when you digest fats, remember, keto diet, 75% to 80% fats. Now, I'm not against the keto diet, but the reality is, the DIT of fats is only 3% to 5%. The DIT of carbs is 10%. But the DIT of protein, 30%. So your body will burn 3 to 5 times more calories digesting protein than it does digesting fats or carbohydrates. Now, the research studies also show that when you eat protein in every single meal, it helps you take control of a hormone called ghrelin. Ghrelin helps you control your hunger and your cravings. So there's several reasons why you should include protein in every single meal. I'll go ahead and post the research studies from everything I was talking about on protein. I have 5 different studies. And what I'll do is, I'll post them below in the comments for those who are interested. But make sure that you take advantage of protein by timing it the right way. And when you time it the right way just 3 or 4 days of the week using my 1-day hormone-resetting protocol, you can actually increase growth hormone over a thousand percent. When you combine protein the right away with other foods, you take control of insulin. So it keeps your body in an environment where you have better energy and you can more easily manage your weight. Now, the last part of my 1-day hormone-resetting protocol is strategic high-carb cheat meals. You see, when you eat strategic high-carb cheat meals at a specific time each week, research shows it can reset your leptin sensitivity. Leptin is the hormone that manages your weight, and it can increase your thyroid hormones because glucose from carbs is the primary building block of thyroid hormones.

Intermittent Fasting: How to Best Use it for Fat Loss (5 Things You Need to Know)

09:01
At first glance, intermittent fasting for weight loss (and more importantly “fat loss”) seems pretty counter intuitive. The idea of skipping breakfast, consuming zero calories for several hours on end and then feasting within a designated time period goes against much of what’s typically believed to be optimal for fat loss and muscle retention. However, the truth is, intermittent fasting comes with several benefits that makes losing weight much easier to do. And when done properly, intermittent fasting can be a great tool to help you lose fat faster and for good – all without sacrificing tons of muscle mass in the process. In this video I’ll not only go through the various intermittent fasting benefits, but I’ll show you exactly how to do intermittent fasting to see the best results. We’ll cover how to begin fasting, the types of meals you should be eating, what an intermittent fasting diet looks like, whether you should train fasted or not, and so on. Give it a watch for the ultimate intermittent fasting guide! Cheers! What is the Ketogenic Diet (in a Nutshell)?

02:00
What is the Ketogenic Diet? It seems bizarre at first -- eating fat? Drastically reducing carbs? How will that help me? Won't that clog my arteries? A low-carb, high-fat (LCHF) diet actually has surprising metabolic and weight-loss benefits. Here are the basics of the ketogenic diet, for those curious about starting. Here are the articles I mentioned in this video: Long-term effects of keto in obese patients: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2716748/ Mayo Clinic article on low-carb diets: http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/weight-loss/in-depth/low-carb-diet/art-20045831?pg=2 NCBI Study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19099589 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition article: http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/85/1/238.full Psychology Today article on Ketones: https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/evolutionary-psychiatry/201104/your-brain-ketones Sound Effect credits: "Bamboo Swing, B7.wav" by InspectorJ of Freesound.org, licensed under Creative Commons: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ "Camera Shutter.wav" by ThompsonMan of Freesound.org, licensed under Creative Commons: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ "Twitter Sound" by Sound Effects https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnydjs-RbS9IEBG3hJLveOQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXsztntI6Mg Instagram: @a.d.keto Twitter: @AD_Keto Blog: http://adketo.wordpress.com

The solution is simple — eat food rich in healthy fats and protein, like milk, avocados, nuts or salmon. Eating the products on our list as a snack, garnish, or the main dish will help you gain weight. And if you combine them with regular exercise, they will help you to build muscle. Bright Side prepared a list of the 19 best foods that are an alternative to boring chicken breasts and incredibly beneficial in helping you on your weight-gaining and muscle-building journey. It's always better to make your own homemade shakes that'll give your body all the vitamins it needs to gain weight and muscle. - Avocado is the top dog of healthy fats! It's super nutritious and has powerful health benefits that can help you on your way to enviable muscle mass. - Red meat has pretty much everything you can ask for when it comes to putting on weight and building muscle. First of all, it contains leucine and creatine, two powerful nutrients for muscle protein stimulation and new tissue formation. - According to the DuPont Nutrition & Health company, the soy protein in tofu is basically one of the best plant proteins you can find. One more reason to add it to your muscle-building menu! - Oily fish like salmon and tuna provide your body with high-quality protein and healthy fats that not only help you bulk up but also benefit your overall health. - Tilapia doesn't contain nearly as much healthy fatty acids as salmon and other oily fish do, but it has its own admirable qualities, the most important being lots and lots of protein! - Eggs are easily the best of the best when it comes to healthy muscle-building. They combine high-quality proteins, healthy fats, and antioxidants, which makes them one of the most effective weight-gain foods out there. - Just one serving of brown rice can provide your body with the necessary amounts of carbs and calories while keeping it relatively low in fat. - Rich in protein, low in fat, affordable, and widely available – yep, it’s all about the beans! Cooked pinto, black, and kidney beans contain around 14 grams of protein per cup. - Lentils are a secret weapon you ought to have if you wanna gain weight quickly. There are 3 main lentil types: brown, green, and red. Choose the ones you like most and add them to other healthy dishes like rice, soups, and salads to double the effect. - Nuts and nut butters in particular are two more products that should definitely make it into your muscle-building meal plan. Pretty much all of them are filled with good calories, protein, and healthy fats. - Simple dried fruits like pineapples, cherries, or apples can do a good job at gaining you some muscle mass too! Despite popular opinion, fruits do not lose their nutrients when dried because their fiber content helps retain all the vitamins! - Dark chocolate can help you get toned and fit! The thing is, dark chocolate with a cocoa content of at least 70% is the ultimate source of antioxidants that boost your health and exercise performance. Top 3 Benefits of the Keto Diet | Enhance Your Body & Brain

Fat mass decreased on the ketogenic diet by 2.2 kg (0.7 kg greater than the Western diet group). In the 16-week study, 38 children, aged 7-12 years, were randomly assigned either 8 grams of inulin or 8 grams of calorie-matching maltodextrin (placebo) to consume once daily 15-30 minutes before dinner. There were no other required dietary changes or lifestyle changes. Researchers found that prebiotic consumption of inulin resulted in greater feelings of fullness, which corresponded with a significant decrease in food consumption as well. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28228425 Inulin & Ghrelin: The fermentation by the microbiota in the gut of prebiotic fiber, such as inulin, results in the production of short-chain fatty acids, such as propionate and butyrate. B Vitamins: One tablespoon of nutritional yeast contains 30–180% of the RDI for B vitamins - when fortified, it is especially rich in thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12. Contains trace minerals: One tablespoon contains 2–30% of the RDI for trace minerals, such as zinc, selenium & manganese. Low glycemic and, as such, has little effect on blood sugar levels. Contains the antioxidant glutathione - protects your cells from damage caused by free radicals. Fiber: Nutritional yeast is a good source of fiber, including beta-1,3 glucan, mannan, and trehalose fiber, all of which contribute to increased satiety. Salt: Sodium depletion alters how the nervous system, including structures within the mesolimbic dopamine system, processes the taste of salt. Sodium deficiency reduces gustatory nerve responses to salt. Neurons within the NST, which receives afferent information from the gustatory nerves, also exhibit altered firing patterns to the taste of salt during deficiency. Interestingly, neurons that respond to sweet tastes such as sucrose begin to fire in response to salty tastes in the depleted animal. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4433288/ Suzie’s Good Fats: Study - Cell Metabolism- Oleic acid is transformed into OEA by cells in the upper region of the small intestine - OEA then finds its way to nerve endings that carry the hunger-curbing message to the brain, there, it activates a brain circuit that increases feelings of fullness. Runner Nutrition in 3 Points: The Best Diet, Foods, and How To Implement

20:16
On today's episode of Training Talk Tuesday, we cover: NUTRITION and how to use it to maximize athletic performance. Focusing on Endurance Running, we will discuss nutritional concepts that you can take with you the rest of your life. The research discussed is CITED below for you to fact-check! ***FDA = "Food and Drug Administration"! Not..."Federal Department of Agriculture" :) My discussion revolves around three main points: 1. The BEST Diet 2. FOODS that support that diet 3. Practical STRATEGIES to implement this diet Within this Training Talk, we learn about optimal macronutrient composition (60%carbs/30%fats/10%protein), utilizing natural food sources for a healthier diet, and practical ways to be accountable to yourself and fit this diet into your life/training cycle. Side topics covered: how to quickly read a nutrition label, what an FDA approved food is, great food-tracking apps and how to use them, ways to overcome binging and sudden food cravings, protein requirements for endurance runners/athletes, the use of dietary fat to maintain testosterone. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CITED RESEARCH - The 60/30/10 Diet is best for endurance athletes. Also discusses recommended Protein for endurance runners https://goo.gl/Q9S8Gs - A ketogenic (low carb) diet may benefit body composition, but may not benefit performance. Weight loss, physical recovery seemed to improve; Loss of power, decreased time to exhaustion during testing https://goo.gl/7CZh39 - Protein requirements for endurance athletes are higher on workout/training days https://goo.gl/6wockY - Sufficient dietary fat intake supports a myriad of important physiological functions in athletes https://goo.gl/Aqz1dv - There is evidence that dietary fat influences anabolic hormone concentrations https://goo.gl/i57Yut - The type of lipid appears to influence circulating Testosterone concentrations: Monounsaturated & Saturated Fatty Acids account for approx 60% of variance in Testosterone concentrations https://goo.gl/MyMiDd - Great article on glycogen metabolism: glycogen is a readily mobilized storage form of glucose; glucose from glycogen is readily mobilized and is therefore a good source of energy for sudden, strenuous activity https://goo.gl/vcsbV4 - Interesting article on marathon effort compared to available glycogen in the legs/liver: running at around 55% of your VO2 max (no faster or slower) is optimal for not hitting the wall prior to finishing https://goo.gl/Uwgfrf - The FDA and reviewing dietary supplements: FDA doesn’t approve structure-function claims on dietary supplements and other foods (e.g. calcium builds strong bones); dietary supplements are not reviewed and approved by FDA based on their safety and effectiveness https://goo.gl/wX2i3R Great Resources for Independent Research: FREE database of research articles: scholar.google.com - just type in some key-words from your question! Nutrition interventions and outcomes among community-dwelling adults - Video Abstract ID 177248

03:00
Video abstract of a review type paper “Assessing the impact of nutrition interventions on health and nutrition outcomes of community-dwelling adults: a systematic review” published in the open access journal Nutrition and Dietary Supplements by authors Sauer AC, Li J, Partridge J, et al. Background: Malnutrition is pervasive in hospitalized patients and older adults. Although evidence shows the benefits of nutrition interventions in hospitalized patients, less is known about the role these interventions play on outcomes in patients in the community. Objective: The objective of this systematic review is to evaluate the current evidence on nutrition interventions’ impact on health and nutrition outcomes among community-dwelling adults. Methods: This systematic review was performed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Original studies of previously published research were identified by using a predefined search strategy. Articles identified through electronic and manual searches were compared against predefined study selection criteria. Results: Twenty articles were deemed eligible for inclusion. Most of the studies examined nutrition interventions through oral nutritional supplements, dietary advice, counseling, and home visits, and were conducted in subjects who either had or were at risk of malnutrition. Nutrition interventions were found to improve anthropometrics (body weight), nutritional and functional status, energy and protein intake, and muscle strength (handgrip strength). However, their impact was inconclusive for body composition, quality of life, readmissions, complications/morbidity, and mortality, mainly due to a limited number of studies. Conclusion: Nutrition interventions were found to improve health and nutrition outcomes among community-dwelling adults. Future research is needed to examine the pervasiveness of malnutrition in the community, to evaluate the impact that nutrition interventions have on improving health outcomes in this population, and to inform the design of novel nutritionfocused intervention programs for adults living in different community settings to improve outcomes. Well, let's take a look at the various forms of fasting, and in this video, let's really break down the one meal a day, OMAD diet, to intermittent fasting in a 16:8 style. So what I want to do in this video is help you understand these two types of fasting and what might work better for you by looking at three very reputable studies. All right, first and foremost, what the heck is the OMAD diet? It's something that's gaining popularity a lot recently, and what it stands for is one meal a day. So essentially, it is a form of intermittent fasting, just in a little bit more of an extreme sense. So in essence what you're doing is you're fasting for 23 or 23 1/2 hours, and then you're consolidating all of your calories into one meal per day. It sounds a little bit intense, and quite honestly it is. Now, more commonly a lot of us know intermittent fasting as something that's more of 16 hour fast, eight hour eating window. So what I'd like to do is I'd like to compare OMAD to 16:8, but I'd also like to compare it to the overall traditional three square meals a day. Morning, midday, and dinner. So the first thing that I want to do is I want to dive into this one study that was published in the American Journal of Clinical Investigation. It was an eight week study that took a look at two groups, okay? One group consumed traditional three square meals, okay? Morning, midday, and evening. The other group consumed one meal a day. And they wanted to look at overall body composition results and what actually happened after eight weeks of eating like this. So what they did do is they had each of these subjects eat the right amount of calories to maintain their body weight. So each person ate a different amount, but it was all relative to what they weighed and what it would take to keep them weighing roughly the same. So what they found at the end of the study is that both groups stayed roughly the same weight. However, the one meal a day group lost on average 4.6 pounds where the other group lost 3.1. So we're still pretty close, but the one meal a day group did lose a little bit more body weight. Now both groups ended up maintaining their lean body mass the same, so there wasn't any loss in muscle, but there was a little bit of loss in fat. Now this is all fine and dandy, and we really like the science, and we like knowing that one meal a day is going to allow you to burn a little bit more fat than three square meals, but that's really not that aggressive. That's honestly not enough to convince me to consolidate all of my eating into a 30 minute window. So let's take a look at another study that was published in the Journal of Translational Medicine, and this study took a look at more of a 16:8 fasting window versus typical breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
