LISA17 - Managing SSH Access without Managing SSH Keys

27:32
Niall Sheridan, Intercom Everyone uses SSH to manage their production infrastructure, but it's really difficult to do a good job of managing SSH keys. Many organisations don't know how many SSH keys have access to production systems or how protected those keys are. A trusted SSH private key can be years old, unprotected by passphrase, and shared among multiple people who may not even work for you. With some tooling and configuration SSH keys can be replaced with limited-use ephemeral certificates, issued centrally and with better access controls and automatic key expiration, solving many of the shortcomings of using SSH keys. This talk will cover: Managing SSH keys: The bad parts Replacing SSH keys with ephemeral certificates: how & why Discussion of an implementation of a CA for SSH certificates Call for participation, showing github source View the full LISA17 program: https://www.usenix.org/lisa17/program

Letting go of expectations: Heather Marshall at TEDxGreenville 2014

13:01
In a search for her biological parents, this writer/teacher discovers a serenity in releasing the world around her from her own behavioral presumptions. Heather Marshall begins by telling us a story of her Scottish birth parents — they were young, too young for the age, and without options other than to give her up for adoption. Later, as an adult, as she was waiting to meet her birth mother, she had time to consider what her reaction would be if her mother was dying, obese, an ex-prostitute. How would she react to each of these situations? She dug deep and learned that expectations are like a third party in a relationship, constantly bouncing around in your head. Instead of dwelling on our expectations for others, we should allow ourselves to fully rest in the reality of the moment. "Whatever expectations you have should be kept away from your relationships," she says. Only in this way can you engage in a truly loving relationship with others. This talk was part of TEDxGreenville UNZIPPED, held April 11, 2014, at the Kroc Center in Greenville, South Carolina. For more information about Heather and her co-presenters, please visit http://tedxgreenville.com/2014presenters. Project Management Simplified: Learn The Fundamentals of PMI's Framework ✓

50:41
✅The best jobs no longer go to the best candidates. Times have changed. They now go to the people with the best strategies. We transformed over 5,000 careers. Join me at LIG and let me show you how yours will be the next career transformed; https://goo.gl/chwjpr Welcome to this week's episode where I make project management simple for you. To make it applicable to the majority of the audience, I am teaching Project Management Institute's (PMI) project management framework. ________________________________________________ Textbooks and frameworks are always boring. So, to make project management more interesting for you, I ran a project to demonstrate what steps to take and when. You won't regret spending 50 minutes to learn the basics of a wonderful practice called project management. You can also download all the templates I used in the session here (no need to register); https://thecareermastery.com/career-tips/project-management-simplified/ Although I strongly recommend you watch the entire session without skipping, for those of you who are just looking for snippets of information, you may find below the index of the video; 03:03 What is a project, program, and portfolio and how are they different from operations? 04:08 Project = Project Life Cycle + Project Management Process 04:43 Project Life Cycle 06:52 Process Groups 09:27 LIG, PMP certification or CAPM certification, which one is right for you? [Hint: I am biased!] 11:53 Process Groups - Initiation 13:06 Process Groups - Initiation - Project Charter 16:50 Process Groups - Initiation - Stakeholder Identification 18:17 Process Groups - Planning 20:30 Process Groups - Planning - Collecting Requirements 22:45 Process Groups - Planning - Defining the Scope 24:41 Process Groups - Planning - Scope Baseline 25:12 Process Groups - Planning - Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) 32:22 Process Groups - Planning - WBS Dictionary & Scope Creep 34:39 Process Groups - Planning - Time Management / Developing a Schedule 36:00 Process Groups - Planning - Gantt Chart 37:38 Process Groups - Planning - Fast Tracking a Project & Project Crashing 38:52 Process Groups - Planning - Cost Management 39:42 Process Groups - Planning - Budget development (for PMP or CAPM takers) 41:02 Process Groups - Executing 42:04 Process Groups - Executing - Gold Plating 43:16 Process Groups - Monitoring and Controlling 45:00 Process Groups - Monitoring and Controlling - Earned Value 47:57 Process Groups - Closing Process Group _______________________________________________________________ What is even a project? It definitely has a sexy tone to it right? Project… I just love the way it sounds. I wonder how cool it must sound in French. Proje… Well, project is a temporary endeavor to create a unique solution. Yeah that’s operations. No Well, the difference between a project and operations is fairly simple. A project ends. So, it’s temporary. You implement your project, you close it, you create a unique product/service/ or whatever outcome you wanted then you are done. Whereas in operations, it’s on-going and repetitive. You may have also heard about the terms program and portfolio. Let me just quickly explain them here. Program is multiple projects put together. Combined. And Portfolio is similarly. Multiple programs put together. So, it’s project, program, portfolio. Now before I go further, and dive deep. You need to understand something crucial. To run any project, you need 2 methodologies. The first one is a project life cycle and the second one is project management process. Most people confuse these 2. And if these are not clear, you can kiss the PMP certification goodbye. It’s absolutely amazing how many content creators in YouTube confuse these two. They are not interchangeable. You cannot afford to confuse a project life cycle with a project management process. Don’t worry I am going to make it very simple for you. Let’s start with Project Life Cycle. Project Life Cycle is unique to a project, to an industry, to your needs. It’s highly customizable. Think of it like this; a human development is a project. So, your life cycle is; 1) Conceiving 2) Birth 3) Childhood 4) Teenage hood. Teenage hood. Is that a word? Teenaging? 5) Adulthood 6) And death Easy stuff right? So, now if it was an IT project. I am not an IT but it would like something like this; High-level design Detailed Design Coding Testing Installation And Turnover This is project life cycle. The term cycle is a bit confusing here. I think. But who knows. This video covers; project management project management institute pmp project management professional certification project life cycle project management PMI managing a project project management fundamentals fundamentals of project management project management for beginners project management course

You exchange information. You need to have the right responses to the employer’s questions. You need to ask good questions. You need the right background. You need to impress. 1. It’s about their future, not your past. You need to get the interviewers, the most senior interviewers, thinking into the future. If you can't get them to imagine what their life will be like and what their company will look like with you there, you'll never get hired. 2. Leaders are inclusive and inspiring. You need to be the high tide that lifts all the boats. Leaders build more leaders. They don't build more followers. You need to show them you're great at inspiring and inclusive. You're great at building teams. 3. Stay away from one-and-done questions because then you’ll be done. Specifically, I mean asking a great question, then receiving their response, and then moving on to the next question. That's the big mistake! The message you're sending to them is that you are a puddle skipper. You are not somebody who's digging deep to get information and collecting it all. You're not well researched. You’re not digging deep enough to get the information you need to make a good decision. -------------------- ABOUT ANDREW -------------------- Andrew LaCivita is an internationally recognized executive recruiter, award-winning author, trainer, and founder and chief executive officer of milewalk and the milewalk Academy. 8 Real Estate Investing Strategies (without actually managing properties)

21:12
Real estate investing has never been easier..... We all know that if we want to build wealth, we can’t do it by investing $100 a month into a mutual fund. Well, yes you will do it over time -- and build wealth in the long run. 💵💵 But, for those that are building wealth a lot quicker; they are doing things differently. =========== Of all the options I shared, #8 is the one I'm excited about: Fundrise. It's an online crowdfunding option that allows you to get started for as little as $500. That's it! You can read more about Fundrise here: https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/fundrise-review-how-to-invest-in-corporate-real-estate-with-a-small-investment/ Or you can open account here: ✅https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/resources/fundrise-youtube-how-to-buy-real-estate.php =========== One of the things you hear most often is people building wealth by investing in real estate. Real estate investing can be intimidating and risky. I am going to share with you my Top 8 ways to invest in real estate -- without managing properties. 🏘️ ➡️ 1. Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) [1:59] This is kind of like mutual funds - but they track specific markets. They are not actively managed and focus on meeting market averages. Vanguard Real Estate Fund is a popular choice but there are lots of options. ➡️ 2. Real Estate Mutual Funds [6:12] These have a focus on real estate and work to outpace what the average is. They are actively managed so you can expect some higher fees. But, you should expect a higher return. ➡️ 3. Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) [9:03] A REIT is a company that specializes in real estate. They own and usually operate income-producing real estate. This could include commercial properties ranging from apartments and shopping malls to warehouses and hospitals. ➡️ 4. Invest in a Real Estate Focus Company [12:25] An example of this type of company would be ReMax. These companies help you buy and sell homes or commercial properties. ➡️ 5. Invest in home construction [12:45] These companies do not manage properties. An example of this type of company is Pulte Homes. There are hundreds of these companies - I’m sure you can find one in your area. ------------------- Online Brokers to Buy ETFs, Mutual Funds or Stocks: TD Ameritrade ✅https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/resources/tdameritrade-youtube-how-to-buy-real-estate.php ETrade ✅https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/resources/etrade-youtube-how-to-buy-real-estate.php Ally Financial ✅https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/resources/ally-youtube-how-to-buy-real-estate.php ➡️ 6. Hire a property manager [14:22] You can buy a house, duplex or apartment complex to generate rental income. But who wants the headache of dealing with that? Hire a property manager to take care of all of the details for you. ➡️ 7. Real Estate Notes [16:33] A private real estate note requires you to lend money to individuals that buy properties and fix them up to flip or rent. ➡️ 8. Online Real Estate Options [17:32] This is my favorite! You can get into this for about $500 and you can do it all from your computer at home. My favorite company for this right now is Fundrise. The process is similar to peer-to-peer lending but you are not investing into notes or loaning people money. Instead, you are pooling your funds with others. ========= 🏘Online Real Estate Investing with Fundrise ✅https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/resources/fundrise-youtube-how-to-buy-real-estate.php ========== 🙁 Have you had a failed real estate investment like me? 🤔 Have you ever considered investing in real estate? Managing Without Growth with Dr Peter Victor

01:27:09
Toronto. July 2, 2010. Economic growth is the over-arching policy objective of governments worldwide. Yet its long-term viability is increasingly questioned because of environmental impacts and impending and actual shortages of energy and material resources. Furthermore, rising incomes in rich countries bear little relation to gains in happiness and well-being . Growth has not eliminated poverty, brought full employment or protected the environment. Results from a simulation model of the Canadian economy suggest that it is possible to have full employment, eradicate poverty, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and maintain fiscal balance without economic growth. It's time to turn our attention away from pursuing growth and towards specific objectives more directly relating to our well-being and that of the planet. Dr. Peter Victor , author of Managing without Growth. Slower by Design, not Disaster, is a professor in environmental studies at York University. He has worked for nearly 40 years in Canada and abroad on economy and environment as an academic, consultant and public servant. Dr. Victor was the founding president of the Canadian Society of Ecological Economics and a past-president of the Royal Canadian Institute for the Advancement of Science. Currently he is a member of the Board of the David Suzuki Foundation and several advisory boards in the public and private sectors. See http://www.pvictor.com . RULE 1: Subtract the last digit from each number to get a zero at the end. It’s easier to “zero out” cash into a piggy bank, and you may use a savings account or any other bank account to transfer the money from your card. RULE 2: Save everything that’s left over before payday — "zero out" one more time at the end of the month. For instance, you still have $300 in cash and $1,000 in the bank — just move it to your savings account. TIMESTAMPS «Zero out» your money every evening 0:31 Move any unspent money to your saving account 1:46 What are the advantages of this simple method? 2:05 The worst places to hide your cash: In the backyard 2:41 Under your mattress 2:58 In shopping bags 3:13 In old wallets and handbags 3:27 In laundry baskets 3:40 Behind a picture or photo in a frame 3:58 In safes that are not bolted down 4:13 In drawers and cabinets 4:34 Where to hide your money 4:53 SUMMARY If you feel like you have run out of places to hide your money, try the following suggestions: • Wrap your money in a plastic bag, and tape it to the bottom of the kitchen counter or to the bottom of your kid’s toy box (the best option is to create a false bottom in it). • In a waterproof container stored in the lowest drawer of your refrigerator or freezer. Make sure it doesn’t read "Ice cream" or something else yummy thieves might want to try. • Hide your savings among buttons, threads, and other sewing accessories. Unless thieves suddenly need to sew something, they most probably won’t look for your money in there. • In a pair of old shoes, clothes, or maybe in an old computer that no longer works. Make sure it all looks like junk you have not disposed of yet. Managing A Narcissist | Ann Barnes | TEDxCollingwood

09:31
Narcissists are on the rise, especially in the workforce. While the research is still out on why this is happening; Ann Barnes outlines the different kinds of narcissists, and provides a framework on how to work with them (or not!). Ann began her legal career acting as a lawyer and business advisor for numerous private and publicly held companies. She specialized in corporate securities and intellectual property law within the entertainment and consumer packaged goods industries. Her parallel passion for health and wellness led her to quit law and found and operate a number of superfood companies. Ann is a well-respected public speaker and health advocate and has written two health based recipe books: “Be a Better Being” and “Eat Super, Be Super”. Over 6 years ago, Ann’s passion for plant-based wellness and entrepreneurial opportunities resulted in her funding, co-founding and acting as Chairman for the first Canadian licensed Medical Cannabis Company: Peace Naturals Project. A year ago she sold the majority of her interest to the medical cannabis public company. Her greatest accomplishment is being a Mom to her 2 teens, who keep her on her game at all times. Ecocity2011 | Peter Victor | Managing without Growth

24:27
SPEAKER: P. Victor. York University, Faculty of Environmental Studies, Toronto, Canada TITLE: Managing without Growth WHERE: At the Ecocity World Summit Montréal 2011, during the keynote "Economics of Ecocities" WHEN: Wednesday, August 24, 2011 ABSTRACT: Economic growth is the over-arching policy objective of governments worldwide. Yet its long-term viability is increasingly questioned because of environmental impacts and impending and actual shortages of energy and material resources. Furthermore, rising incomes in rich countries bear little relation to gains in happiness and well-being.

What the heck does a consultant DO, exactly? - Management Consulting 101

16:59
People say that I solve #businessproblems. That’s not wrong. But it’s way over-simplified. What does it mean to “solve problems”? What specifically do #consultants do to do that? So let’s put it this way. Think of #managementconsultants, especially entry-level ones as “content ambassadors”. We act like the bridge between a complicated client context with various needs, conditions, and attributes and a massive back-end network of knowledge and experts. This sounds simple but it’s not. There is a lot of slicing and shovelling involved. Let’s look at an example. I was in charge of the cement workstream and the key question was: should the client close down the plant? Yes, I have a massive network of experts behind me but there’s no way they can answer that question given how little they know about the client and market context. As the #consultant in charge, I have to analyze the problem, breaking it into smaller parts… In order to know if the client should close the plant or not, we need to know if we can turnaround their negative profits and if yes, how long does it take? Then into the first branch, I explore ways to improve sales and ways to cut costs. Suppose I was studying the costs and realize logistics is one of the biggest. Then only at this point would I choose from the network a cement logistics expert to talk to. Is this clear enough for ya? Let’s watch this video for more insights! Managing Your Photography Expectations

11:32
It's easy to let your photography expectations get the best of you. But, managing your expectations is an important tip. Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/brendanvanson My Camera Gear: https://www.brendansadventures.com/whats-in-my-bag/ One of the biggest tips I give new photographers is to learn to manage their photography expectations. It's so easy to pick up a camera and think that you're going to just go out there and start making Nat Geo quality images right away. It doesn't work like that. And, in wildlife photography, those expectations seem to be even higher. New photographers - including myself when I was new - think that going out on safari means that you'll automatically get incredible photos of something like lions hunting, or a cheetah running. But, that's just not the case. Our photography expectations are so high that it can almost ruin the experience for us. So, manage your exceptions. There's no photography tip that's better for you. It will allow you to appreciate your world, and photograph it the best you can. For more photography tips, be sure to subscribe, and I'll see you tomorrow. #photography Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/brendanvanson Facebook: http://www.fb.com/thetravelwriter

Richard Branson: Advice for Entrepreneurs

04:04
Don't miss new Big Think videos! Subscribe by clicking here: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Since Branson founded Virgin in 1970, the company has grown from a small record outlet to a global powerhouse. Can the brand continue its success without him? Question: What is your advice for entrepreneurs? Richard Branson:  I think the most important thing about running a company is to remember all the time what a company is.  A company is simply a group of people. And as a leader of people you have to be a great listener and you have to be a great motivator.  You have to be very good at praising and looking for the best in people.  People are no different from flowers.  If you water flowers they flourish, if you praise people they flourish. And that is a critical attribute of a leader. Question: What has been the most difficult part about running Virgin?Richard Branson:  There is a very thin dividing line between success and failure.  Most people who set off in business without financial backing they fail at some times in their lives. I've only just stayed at the right side of that dividing line.  For instance, just after...  You know we had a record company.  I was fed up flying on other people's airlines.  I felt that the experience of flying on other people's airlines was an unpleasant one and I decided to set up an airline.  Well our bank went into a complete panic attack and when I came back from doing the inaugural flight of Virgin Atlantic's very, very first flight from London to New York I came back to find the bank manager sitting on my doorstep and informing me that they were going to close Virgin down on the Monday and this was the Friday and that I had two days to effectively pay them off the monies that they'd loaned us and I remember pushing the bank manager out of my house, telling him he wasn't welcome, which is a dangerous thing to do to your bank manager and then spending the weekend ringing around the world to all of the distributors of our music asking if they could give us a temporary loan to get us through the following week, which they were good enough to do and by the end of the week we had changed banks and we actually managed to find a bank that was willing to lend us 30 times the overdraft facility that our bank had lent us and we managed to survive. And I think the moral of that story is actually don't think of your bank as somebody that you're beholden to.  I mean don't...  You know people just don't move from one bank to another.  Sometimes you need to be willing to step up and move your banks in the same way that you should step up and move your doctor on occasions and anyway, I learned from that lesson. Question: Can Virgin continue to be successful without you?Richard Branson: Virgin does work very well without me.  I mean I use myself to build the brand, to build the sort of three or four hundred companies around the world, but I also learned the art of delegation.  I have a fantastic team of people who run the Virgin companies, give them a lot of freedom to run the companies as if they were their own companies.  I give them the freedom to make mistakes and the Virgin brand is now maybe one of the top 20 brands in the world, well respected. And when my balloon bursts Virgin will continue to flourish. And maybe I add the icing on the cake on occasions, maybe they'll have to spend a bit more money on marketing, but fortunately Virgin is in a state where it can live on healthily without me. Managing Chronic Pain Without Medication

01:43
The use of prescription pain medication can start after an injury, surgery or trauma, but doctors say these medications need to be closely monitored. “I’m trying to manage your pain while at the same time managing the risk of harm to you from these medications,” said Dr. Usman Mian, an emergency physician with Lee Health. A dependence on pain medication, like opioids, can actually cause the patient more pain. “A lot of times when they are on opioids for a long period of time they can develop things called allodynia, which is where stimuli that wouldn’t normally be painful are now painful to them,” said Dr. Mian. Over time, patients will need a higher dose to achieve the same relief. So when patients need pain management doctors offer other alternatives. “I’m going to use other medications. I might use other things as well like trigger point injections or nerve blocks to help control your pain,” said Dr. Mian. Nancy Gresham, a physical therapist with Lee Health, also teaches patients how to manage chronic pain without medication. “The number one thing I like to tell my patients is they want to start movement.” Movements like Pilates, yoga, stretching, breathing exercises, and tai chi can help calm the nervous system and alleviate chronic pain. “I want to teach you how to settle yourself, how to rewire your nervous system because when your body is in pain, I want to teach you how to rewire it so that you can become calm,” said Gresham. Offering patients different alternatives to pain relief that will benefit them short term and long term.
