A dire report prepared for President Medvedev by Russia's Ministry of Natural Resources is warning today that the British Petroleum (BP) oil and gas leak in the Gulf of Mexico is about to become the worst environmental catastrophe in all of human history threatening the entire eastern half of the North American continent with "total destruction". Russian scientists are basing their apocalyptic destruction assessment due to BP's use of millions of gallons of the chemical dispersal agent known as Corexit 9500 which is being pumped directly into the leak of this wellhead over a mile under the Gulf of Mexico waters and designed, this report says, to keep hidden from the American public the full, and tragic, extent of this leak that is now estimated to be over 2.9 million gallons a day. The dispersal agent Corexit 9500 is a solvent originally developed by Exxon and now manufactured by the Nalco Holding Company of Naperville, Illinois that is four times more toxic than oil (oil is toxic at 11 ppm (parts per million), Corexit 9500 at only 2.61ppm). In a report written by Anita George-Ares and James R. Clark for Exxon Biomedical Sciences, Inc. titled "Acute Aquatic Toxicity of Three Corexit Products: An Overview" Corexit 9500 was found to be one of the most toxic dispersal agents ever developed. Even worse, according to this report, with higher water temperatures, like those now occurring in the Gulf of Mexico, its toxicity grows. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in discovering BP's use of this dangerous dispersal agent ordered BP to stop using it, but BP refused stating that their only alternative to Corexit 9500 was an even more dangerous dispersal agent known as Sea Brat 4. Wide of news conference STORY LINE: Ministers from Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India signed agreements to start construction work on the much delayed TAP (Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline) pipeline project in 2010 on Thursday. The Afghan-Turkmen pipeline project has been on hold since the 1990s, when the hardline Taliban Islamist movement came into power in Afghanistan. The 1,680-kilometre (1,044-mile) project was revived after US-led forces toppled the Taliban in late 2001, although Afghanistan remains mired in violence, especially in its south. Pakistan said it would ensure the safety of its portion of both pipelines. The Pakistani Minister for Oil and Gas, Khwaja Asif, tried to explain the challenges surrounding the project. Asif said, "projects of this kind and this magnitude, it takes time, and of course we are living in a very volatile region and that also curtails our availability to go faster". The gas pipeline project to be completed at cost of 7.6 (bn) billion US dollars (4.85 (b) billion euros) will start supplying 3.2 (bn) billion cubic feet of gas per day through a 56 inch (1.43 metre) diameter pipeline from the Dauletabad Field in Turkmenistan to Fazilka at the Pakistan-India border, passing through Herat and Kandahar in Afghanistan and Multan in Pakistan. Peter Fedon, the country director for the Asian Development Bank (ADB) which facilitated the meeting, said at the news conference, "we believe that this is the way forward to support, to promote, economic development and reduce poverty. And this project has all the hallmarks of a flagship project of regional cooperation between the four involved parties". ADB agreed to take up the issue of a comprehensive review of the feasibility study in order to move forward to the next phase of inviting investor interest in the project. While in Islamabad, delegates from Pakistan, Iran and India also sat down to discuss another separate multi billion dollar gas pipeline project - one opposed by the United States. Wide exterior of Islamabad's Marriott hotel STORYLINE: Petroleum and gas ministers from India and Pakistan attended talks in Islamabad on Thursday to discuss the multi-billion dollar IPI (Iran-Pakistan-India) gas pipeline project. The Indian Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Murli Deora and Pakistani Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources, Khwaja Asif met at a hotel in Pakistan's capital. The IPI project has been delayed in part because of Indian worries about the safety of portions of the pipeline running through Pakistan. Pakistan and India are long time rivals who have fought three wars since gaining independence from Britain in 1947. Energy-hungry India is also currently negotiating the proposed seven (b) billion US dollars gas pipeline with Iran, and the project is expected to top discussions when Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad makes his first visit to the South Asian country next Tuesday. The United States strongly opposes the pipeline including Iran, which it accuses of running a clandestine nuclear weapons program and arming Iraqi militants. Iran says its nuclear program is only for peaceful energy purposes. US Deputy State Department spokesman Tom Casey told reporters on Monday in Washington that New Delhi should press Ahmadinejad to end Iran's alleged nuclear program and aid to Iraqi militants. India made clear on Tuesday that it would make its own decisions. ISLAMABAD – Former premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Tuesday appeared before the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) probe team at the bureau’s office in Rawalpindi after being summoned in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) scam case. According to details, the NAB has summoned Abbasi as former minister for petroleum and natural resources for recording his statement in ‘illegal’ award of the LNG contract with Qatar. In this regard, a questionnaire containing 70 queries has been prepared including: the reason of necessity of the contract, the person who had approved the conditions of the contract, holding the ministry of petroleum while being the prime minister of the state, the number of visits to Qatar for formulating the contract, and how could the contract be signed against rules and regulations and misuse of authority for approval of the contract. The apex court on September 10, 2018 directed the NAB to complete the inquiry against Abbasi and others for the alleged corruption in the LNG contract. As the minister for petroleum and natural resources, he has been accused of granting contract on LNG Terminal to ETPL, Tri-partial agreement, LSA with EETPL and LNG import from Qatar etc. In June 2018, the NAB approved inquiry against former premier Nawaz Sharif and Abbasi, who was the former minister for petroleum and natural resources at that time, in granting contract of LNG terminal for 15 years to their ‘favourite’ company. It was also observed that this contract had allegedly caused a loss of billions of rupees to the national exchequer. The NAB in January interrogated former finance minister Miftah Ismail in the same case. According to NAB documents, the contract for the LNG import and distribution was awarded to the Elengy Terminal, a subsidiary of Engro, in 2013 in violation of the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) rules and relevant laws.
