Journey to safer chemicals - REACH registration

01:45
For 10 years, chemical companies have assessed the risks of their chemicals used in Europe and sent that information to the European Chemicals Agency according to the criteria set out in the REACH Regulation. Today, we know more than ever before about the chemicals on the EU/EEA market, their properties and impacts. Companies are able to advise their customers on how to use them safely. ECHA together with the national authorities and the European Commission will use the knowledge to design EU wide measures to protect our citizens and the environment from any harmful effects. What are the REACH Regulations?

02:32
The REACH Regulations replace a number of directives with a single system EU regulation concerning the registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals. The Regulations are in place to provide a high level of protection to human health and the environment from the use of chemicals and to make the people who place chemicals on the market responsible for understanding and managing the risks associated with their use.

European Regulation on Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP)

05:09
We are changing the labelling of our products from the end of 2013. The change is required by all EU Member States to meet the European regulation on classification, labelling and packaging (CLP) of substances and mixtures. The CLP Regulation ensures that the hazards posed by certain chemicals are clearly explained to workers and consumers in the EU through clear classification and labelling. The legislation will bring the EU into line with the United Nations' Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). In time, this worldwide standard will replace the old European labelling systems. Labels (and safety data sheets) will look different in future but this does not necessarily reflect a change in the composition or performance of -- your tried and tested Standox products.

ECHA - The Use of Alternatives to Testing on Animals for the REACH Regulation

04:22
ECHA publishes a report on the use of alternatives to testing in animals for the REACH Regulation. Interview with Leena Ylä-Mononen, Director of Evaluation and Norbert Fedtke, Head of Unit of Evaluation about the findings of the report. REACH is clear that every effort must be made so that testing chemicals on animals is truly a last resort -- when there is no other scientifically reliable way of showing the impact on humans or the environment. REACH also demands that companies in possession of data on a chemical must share it (and share the cost) with any other companies making the same substance, thereby removing the potential for duplicate testing. Safer chemicals within REACH

08:04
More information: http://ec.europa.eu./avservices/video/video_prod_en.cfm?type=detail&prodid=665 New EU rules for the chemical industry -- the REACH package -- are set to improve our health and protect the environment. Obliging companies to register and provide information on the chemicals they use should enable public authorities to identify their properties more quickly and accurately. Particularly severe on toxic products, the new rules will encourage the European chemicals industry to develop new substances that are less harmful for people and the environment. As a result, the sector itself should also gain a lead in innovative and sustainable technologies.

REACH addresses the production and use of chemical substances, and their potential impacts on both human health and the environment. Its 849 pages took seven years to pass, and it has been described as the most complex legislation in the Union's history and the most important in 20 years. It is the strictest law to date regulating chemical substances and will affect industries throughout the world. REACH entered into force on 1 June 2007, with a phased implementation over the next decade. The regulation also established the European Chemicals Agency, which manages the technical, scientific and administrative aspects of REACH.

REACH, a test case for better regulation - Towards safer chemicals management in the workplace

03:08
With the adoption of the Better Regulation Agenda on 19th May, the European Commission is taking first concrete steps in the definition of its policy. This issue is expected to be heavily discussed in Parliament and Council in the following weeks, all the more since the Parliament has been very careful about the risk of better regulation being misused to remove environmental laws. There is a growing interest across stakeholders for the application of the better regulation approach to the management of chemicals. The Commission, the Parliament, the Council and the industry have started to look into a more consistent interaction between REACH and workplace legislation. Trade unions have been vocal about speeding up the process of implementing relevant workplace legislation, encouraging the Commission to adopt exposure limits for a number of chemicals. * What are the most “burdensome” aspects of REACH Authorization and how could they be tackled? * How do exposure limits contribute to a safe management of chemicals? Where are there duplications with REACH? What could be simplified? * How can workplace legislation and its effective implementation contribute to safe chemicals management? What synergies could be used between REACH and workplace legislation? How can better regulation elements be applied in chemicals management in the interest of health and safety, environmental protection and competitiveness?

Changes to the Definition of an "Article" Under EU REACH

15:43
In 2017, the European Chemicals Agency clarified the definition of an "Article" under EU REACH, which changes the way that your Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) totals are calculated. Companies affected by EU REACH may declare that their products contain no SVHC substances of more than 0.1%, but if you are still calculating based on the weight of the product as a whole instead of the weight of each individual component, you could be making an inaccurate declaration. This video describes the change and explains how you should be calculating your SVHC values. GreenSoft Technology, Inc. provides data services to help with this process. We collect Full Material Declaration (FMD) data from your suppliers for you and use our GreenData Manager software to store and calculate the data, using the correct formulas to determine whether the product can be declared as SVHC-free or not. Even if you have collected compliance declarations from your suppliers before, it may need to be recollected with this new calculation formula in mind. Matthias Herzler, Senior Scientist, Chemicals Safety unit at the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) Presented at the 2018 OpenTox Euro Conference in Athens, Greece. The presentation will give an overview of how in silico and other „new approach methodologies“ are implemented in European Chemicals law, i.e. REACH (Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals) and CLP (Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 on the Classification, Labelling, and Packaging of dangerous substances and mixtures, translating the UN GHS into European law). According to the fundamental paradigm of these legislative frameworks, industry is primarily responsible for assuring safe use of their chemicals, while the authorities (Member State agencies, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), and the European Commission) fulfil a control function, with their own assessment and/or risk management activities focusing on substances of particular concern. REACh: Innovation and integrated EU goals

03:41
Technical innovation plays a significant role in the achievement of the integrated goals of the European Union such as Energy Roadmap 2050 or Resource- efficiency. One main objective of the European Chemicals Legislation’s REACh is to enhance innovation. This should be triggered by the introduction of the candidate list and authorisation route, stimulating the development of safer alternatives to various chemicals. The High Technology sector, dependent on a few innovative key materials, might be highly affected by such substitution-driven mechanisms. Are EU decision-makers fully aware of the direct impact of REACh regulation on key materials, on the one hand, and their relevance for achieving the requirements and objectives of other policy areas, on the other? What should be the appropriate consistent regulatory framework to create a climate that is open to innovation more broadly? The High Tech sector is concerned about the potentially significant negative impact of REACh on innovation and business development. Are these concerns justified? What is the European semiconductors industry’s interpretation of “true innovation“? What is the role of other drivers for innovation such as energy or materials efficiency?
