What is STOCK EXCHANGE? What does STOCK EXCHANGE mean? STOCK EXCHANGE meaning & explanation

What is STOCK EXCHANGE? What does STOCK EXCHANGE mean? STOCK EXCHANGE meaning - STOCK EXCHANGE definition - STOCK EXCHANGE explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. A stock exchange or bourse is an exchange where stock brokers and traders can buy and/or sell stocks (also called shares), bonds, and other securities. Stock exchanges may also provide facilities for issue and redemption of securities and other financial instruments, and capital events including the payment of income and dividends. Securities traded on a stock exchange include stock issued by listed companies, unit trusts, derivatives, pooled investment products and bonds. Stock exchanges often function as "continuous auction" markets, with buyers and sellers consummating transactions at a central location, such as the floor of the exchange. To be able to trade a security on a certain stock exchange, it must be listed there. Usually, there is a central location at least for record keeping, but trade is increasingly less linked to such a physical place, as modern markets use electronic networks, which gives them advantages of increased speed and reduced cost of transactions. Trade on an exchange is restricted to brokers who are members of the exchange. In recent years, various other trading venues, such as electronic communication networks, alternative trading systems and "dark pools" have taken much of the trading activity away from traditional stock exchanges. The initial public offering of stocks and bonds to investors is by definition done in the primary market and subsequent trading is done in the secondary market. A stock exchange is often the most important component of a stock market. Supply and demand in stock markets are driven by various factors that, as in all free markets, affect the price of stocks (see stock valuation). There is usually no obligation for stock to be issued via the stock exchange itself, nor must stock be subsequently traded on the exchange. Such trading may be off exchange or over-the-counter. This is the usual way that derivatives and bonds are traded. Increasingly, stock exchanges are part of a global securities market.

What is a Market Maker?

01:58
Welcome to the Investors Trading Academy talking glossary of financial terms and events. Our word of the day is “Market Maker” A broker-dealer who is prepared to buy or sell a specific security — such as a bond or at least one round lot of a stock — at a publicly quoted price, is called a market maker in that security. Other brokers buy or sell specific securities through market makers, who may maintain inventories of those securities. There is often more than one market maker in a particular security, and they bid against each other, helping to keep the marketplace liquid. The Stock Market and the corporate and municipal bond markets are market maker markets. In contrast, on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange there's a single specialist to handle transactions in each security. Market Makers must be compensated for the risk they take; what if he buys your shares in IBM then IBM's stock price begins to fall before a willing buyer has purchased the shares? To prevent this, the market maker maintains a spread on each stock he covers. The market maker may purchase your shares of IBM from you for $100 each the ask price and then offer to sell them to a buyer at $100.05 the bid price. The difference between the ask and bid price is only $.05, but by trading millions of shares a day, he's managed to pocket a significant chunk of change to offset his risk. In contrast to conventional brokers, marker makers assume a high level of risk because of the high number of units they hold their inventory. Market makers are entrusted with promoting market efficiency by keeping markets liquid. To ensure impartiality for the benefit of their clients, brokerage houses who act as market makers are legally required to separate their market making activities from their brokerage sales operations. How Volume Affects & Plays a Role in Stock Prices

42:41
How Volume Affects & Plays a Role in Stock Prices ★ SUMMARY ★ Hey this is Sasha Evdakov and welcome to another episode of let’s talk stocks, episode number 66. I decided to number some of these episodes now so we can easily reference them in the future and now that we have a podcast, it’s just a good way to reference them rather than referencing the title so just makes things a little bit easier in the future. Even though we’ve done probably a couple hundred of these episodes in the past, you can go back and look at them. But the more important ones, the longer ones, we decided to go ahead and number though, so people can easily reference them. In this week’s episode, episode 66 we’re going to discuss how volume affects and plays a role in stock prices or how it moves that stock market or the specific stock that you are watching. This kind of references episode 65 "the cause and effect ripples in the stock market", so if you haven’t watched that episode posted on December 17th, 2015, make sure you go back and actually watch that because they kind of will work together. In this episode that’s what we’re going to hone in and focus on, because I’ve had a few questions over the holidays that asked me about volume. Even though we’ve done this subject before in detail, I’m going to go over it again in detail. We won’t go in as much detail as we do in the courses of course, but we will go in detail about how it really plays a role and why it plays a role, so that’s what I’m going to cover. So at least you get an idea of why it’s important. Hopefully over the last few weeks you had a great time over the holidays, maybe a little bit of a mental shift or break, maybe you got a chance to spend some time with the family. For me personally, I find that the holidays are always really busy. It used to be, when I was a lot younger, I could just relax and enjoy the holidays much more but I guess as you age and get older, there’s a lot more things that you actually have to do for the holidays and I find it sometimes overwhelming but nevertheless once they are over that last week right before new year, I find it’s a lot more peaceful and more relaxing. Hopefully you got some time to think, for us we got a chance to go to Canada, and typically we like to go up north, and see the families up there, and I spent some time in the winter areas doing some winter activities and festivities, when it’s colder and when it’s warmer we go back down to Florida and I spent some time over there. So in either case that was kind of what we did over the summer months, here coming up on vacation. I guess around easter time we’ll be going to Florida, but nevertheless hopefully wherever you are, whether you’re in the United States, whether your overseas, you just had a nice holiday break from the markets, and hopefully when you came back the cause and effect, what’s going on right now, what’s happening didn’t shock you too much, hopefully that you were prepared for it. With that being said and that in mind, let’s dig deeper into this lesson because it’s an important lesson to really understand how things move in the markets and how things behave. Trading during holidays To do some insight for you regarding the holidays, typically what I do when I’m on holiday, and it just depends on my focus and how much focus I can have on the stocks, typically I’m out all of my positions, meaning I don’t hold my positions if I cannot watch them. What does The Securities and Exchange Commission do?

02:41
Any questions? The Securities and Exchange Commission is a government entity created to regulate the trading in securities such as stocks and bonds. The "SEC" as it is known was created after the Great Depression to protect the public by regulating the trading in stocks and bonds. The goal is for the average investor, Joe Q, to have access to the same information as the executives who oversee or work for the public companies that are traded on the exchanges. All public companies must file their results with the SEC on a periodic basis, usually each quarter so that the public has access to the same information as the company executives. Also, the SEC makes sure that the "insiders" who work for the companies, do not have an unfair advantage to invest or trade in securities based on "inside" information that is not yet available to the public. So, the SEC is like an investment police force!

Although volume won't help intelligent investors learn the intrinsic value of a company, it can be used as a tool to help predict market behavior. Many times investors can be fooled into believing that the market price of a stock is determined by all the shareholders. This idea is false. When we look at the volume of a company on an given day, we can quickly get a sense of how many traders are actually determine the price of a stock when we compare this number to the shares outstanding. This ratio, volume/shares outstanding, provides a good idea how many traders are moving away from the company and how many are coming into the company. When the company trades at a very low volume, we can generally say that the shareholder agree with the market price. Likewise, if the volume is very high, we can generally say that shareholders disagree with the market price. In the video, we demonstrated this principal with Wells Fargo (WFC). When we looked at the historical market price for WFC, we learned that on the day where the volume was the highest in ten years, the market price was at an all time low. This idea of shareholders disagreeing with the market price when volume is relatively high is an important point that stock traders can use to their advantage. Always remember, volume can mean that the stock is over priced or underpriced. The peak or valley is for you to discern.

How the Federal Reserve (FED) & Interest Rates Move the Stock Market

31:55
How the Federal Reserve (FED) & Interest Rates Move the Stock Market ★ SUMMARY ★ Hey! It’s Sasha Evdakov it’s September 17th and welcome to the Rapid Recap. This week's lesson is how the Federal Reserve or also known as the FED and interest rates move the stock market. Now I love doing these Rapid Recaps because I feel like you get so much knowledge, information and insight about the markets because when I first started trading it was not any of this YouTube going on there wasn't a lot of videos in fact the internet was a lot less bandwidth. I remember still when I had to use dial up to connect to the internet. A lot of things were very static so I didn't really understand or have a lot of Education around to learn number one what the Federal Reserve did but more importantly what it did in terms of how it move the markets and then taking it a step further. What I should be doing with my stocks or my positions based on the federal reserve so how should I be positioning myself. You might be wondering the same thing especially if you're new to the Rapid Recap if you've just joined me maybe just started trading a month or two ago. So you might not understand how the Federal Reserve plays a role in the stock market and I will tell you it plays a pretty heavy role in terms of the big boys the institutions and how they purchase or sell stocks in companies. The Federal Reserve is pretty powerful in the sense of moving money in the control of supply and demand of money but really they can only do one thing to simplify things they're either raising or lowering the supply of money and that's what they do with interest rates so they can hike or cut interest rates and that's what they do. This week's recap is really focused on the Federal Reserve or the FED and about interest rates and how they move the stock market. So that's what we're going to start with today.
