What Does Different Lines on Road Mean? | Everything about Lines on Roads Explained
Meaning of lines on Indian Road Various lines on Indian roads 1. Broken While Line 2. Solid white Line 3. Double Yello Lines 4. Solid Yello line next to Broken Yellow line 5. Edge Line (White) 6. Edge line (Yellow) Follow traffic rules and be safe. Drive Safe today we are going to talk about meaning of lines on Indian roads. You might have noticed, that some road markings are either white or yellow and sometimes they are continuous or broken. Each of these road markings in India are actually different signs that grant varying permissions to drivers on the road. Here’s what each one of them means. Single Solid Line (in White color) If you are on a road with single solid white line, you cannot overtake a vehicle or make a U-turn. However, you may cross the line to avoid an obstruction or to exit the road to enter a perpendicular road. Single Broken White Line This is the most common of road markings in India, a broken white line indicates that – you may change lanes, overtake vehicles or make a U-turn, after seeing that it is safe to do so. Double Yellow Lines Double Yellow lines can never be crossed unless it is to avoid a major obstruction. It is usually used on 2-lane roads, it’s used to prevent crossing-over into the lane with traffic going in the opposite direction. Double White Lines These are similar to double yellow lines, Neither traffic stream is allowed to cross them. Also where there is visibility restricted in both the directions, double continuous lines comes in use. Combination of Solid and Broken Lines If you are driving on a road having combination of solid and broken lines then: If the line on your side is continuous, you cannot cross it. If the line on your side is broken, you may cross it to overtake (only if it is safe to do so) that too on your own risk. White Edge Line They are used to mark the limit of the main road upto which a driver can safely venture. But, you should never drive over it. Yellow Edge Line Yellow edge lines indicate no parking area. You can not stop on these lines even to drop passengers or to load/unload luggage. Meanings of Road Markings in India, Pavement markings, Traffic signs & symbols
We see a lot of road markings on our city roads & highways, but most of the times tend to ignore those. So I thought of giving a careful glance towards the most common markings on Indian roads and their meanings. I have also touched on some recent innovations happening in this field like Noise creating Rumblers, Mechanical devices(reflective or non-reflective), thermoplastic reflective markings & 3D zebra crossings. Road Sign Classifications | Passing a Road Test
Road signs are divided into broad classifications. Watch the video to learn these! Get Your ROAD TEST CHECKLIST: https://www.smartdrivetest.com/pass-road-test-checklist SUBSCRIBE TODAY! ► http://youtube.com/c/smartdrivetest REGULATORY SIGNS The first and most important are regulatory signs. The root word of regulatory is regulations, which means these signs are the law and must be obeyed. CAUTION, ADVISORY, or WARNING SIGNS The next class is cautionary signs, which often warn you of hazards, changes to road conditions, and obstructions along the roadway. CONSTRUCTION SIGNS Next are construction signs which are most prominent during the summer time. Many construction zones have reduced speed limits and these must be obeyed, especially during a road test. As well, reduced speeds in construction zones are often accompanied with increased fines. Action permitted and action not-permitted are another class. DESTINATION & SERVICE SIGNS And the final class are the destination and services signs. These signs convey information through shape, colour, and/or the symbols there on. Knowing your road signs are critical to being successful on both a learner’s and on-road road test. Good luck on your road test! ************************** www.smartdrivetest.com www.facebook.com/smartdrivetest www.twitter.com/smartdrivetest www.instagram.com/smartdrivetest/

Pavement lines: What do the lines on the road mean?
There is a lot of information available on the roadways, directing the flow of traffic and interacting with drivers. Pavement markings help you just like road signs and traffic signals. They are used to warn and direct drivers and to regulate traffic. It's actually quite simple to interpret roadway markings. There are two colors involved and drivers must understand the difference between what the colors mean just as much as the difference between broken lines and solid lines and their meanings. YELLOW LINES mark the center of a two-way road used for two-way traffic. You may pass on a two-way road if the yellow centerline is broken. When a solid and a broken yellow line are together, you must not pass if you are driving next to the solid line. Two solid yellow lines mean no passing. Never drive to the left of these lines. WHITE LINES painted on the pavement indicate traffic traveling in your direction? Broken White Line: you may change lanes if it is safe to do so. Solid White Line: requires you to stay within the lane and also marks the shoulder of the roadway. DO NOT PASS - When there are double solid yellow lines. DO NOT PASS - When a solid yellow line is on your side. WHEN YOU MAY PASS BROKEN YELLOW LINE - You may pass if movement can be made safely. TURN LANES - Turn lanes are found in the middle of some two-way streets. The lane is marked on both sides by two painted lines—inner line broken, outer line solid. Use this lane only for making left turns. STOP LINES - A stop line is a wide white line painted across the street. When a crosswalk is not marked, stop at the corner. Check for traffic before crossing. CROSSWALKS - A crosswalk is a part of the pavement where the white sidewalk lines would extend across the street, and it is for pedestrian traffic. EDGE OF PAVEMENT - White lines Edge lines are used to outline and separate the outside edge of the pavement from the shoulder. Right edge lines are marked with a solid white line and left edge lines are marked with a solid yellow line. Every driver needs to be extra careful when the weather is bad. Always be alert to what is happening on the road. Courtesy of YNN / Time Warner Cable Aired: 1/17/2011

Ultimate Driving School Lagos, Nigeria - Road Signs and Road Markings 7
Traffic Signs, Signals and Road Markings Signs, signals and pavement markings help indicate the rules of the road designed for the safe movement of vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. As a driver, you are required to know them. The shapes of signs enable you to identify them in darkness, fading light, fog, or rain. Clear and efficient signing is an essential part of highway and traffic engineering and a road with poor signing or with badly maintained signs is an unsatisfactory road. Road users depend on signing for information and guidance; highway authorities depend on signing for the efficient working and the enforcement of traffic regulations, for traffic control, and as an aid to road safety. Signing includes not only signs on posts but also carriageway markings, beacons, studs, bollards, traffic signals and other devices. Signs must give road users their message clearly and at the correct time. The message must be unambiguous and speedily understood; it must be given not too soon for the information to have been forgotten before it is needed, and not too late for the safe performance of consequent manoeuvres. The types of signs and carriageway markings etc, available for use are prescribed by Regulations. Limiting the number of types of sign available assists in their quick recognition as does uniformity of shape, colour and lettering for each type. It also makes available to highway authorities a set of standard signs and saves them the labour of design. It aids the courts in giving the same meaning to standard signs. Quick recognition is further aided by using different shapes and colours for different sign groups, e.g., warning signs are triangular with black symbols, yellow grounds and red borders. There are three basic types of traffic sign: signs that give orders, signs that warn and signs that give information. Each type has a different shape. A further guide to the function of a sign is its colour. All triangular signs are red. - Circles give orders - Triangles warn - Rectangles inform Blue circles generally give a mandatory instruction such as "turn left", or indicate a route available only to particular classes of traffic, e.g. buses and cycles only Red rings or circles tell you what you must not do, e.g. you must not exceed 50 kmph, no vehicles over the height shown may proceed Blue rectangles are used for information signs except on motorways where blue is used for direction signs Green rectangles are used for direction signs There are a few exceptions to the shape and colour rules, to give certain signs greater prominence. Examples are the "STOP" and "GIVE WAY" signs.
