How Do I Pay Myself in a Single-Member LLC? - All Up In Yo' Business

08:48
Learn more about 180 Law Co. LLC by visiting http://180lawco.com. One question that I get asked quite often, because it’s a really good question, is how the owner of a single-member LLC is supposed to pay him/herself. There are two possible answers to this question, depending on how the LLC is taxed. Unless the LLC elects otherwise, a single-member LLC is considered a “disregarded entity” and all of the income to the LLC is treated as income to the business owner, and is all subject to self-employment tax. So basically, the owner of a single-member LLC can pay himself however and whenever he wants, keeping in mind a few important considerations: 1. Make sure you are prepared to pay taxes. Since the LLC is a disregarded entity, if the business earns $100k but you only “pay” yourself $50k, you are still going to be responsible for paying all of the taxes, including self-employment taxes, on the full $100k. (For simplicity’s sake, I am pretending there are no deductions or anything.) So you need to set aside enough money to make sure you can cover your taxes. 2. The business has to remain adequately capitalized. This means that you need to keep enough money in the business to cover all your overhead, debts, bills, salary for employees, etc. You should also leave some extra “padding” for possibly building up your business, purchasing equipment, and whatever else you may decide to do with your business. In the books, any payments to yourself should be recorded as “Member Distribution” or “Member Withdrawal.” If the LLC elects to be taxed as an S Corporation, on the other hand, you have to be paid a “reasonable” salary. Self-employment taxes will only be paid on that salary rather than on the full amount of profit the business earns. Any money that the business owner takes above that reasonable salary is considered a dividend and won’t be subject to self-employment taxes. To learn more about S Corporations, watch my earlier video What the Heck is an S Corporation at http://youtu.be/i5to7Da3wMw?list=UUNh7tqEn68tf0oOfq4NsFsg If your LLC is not taxed as an S Corp, you don’t need to put yourself on payroll, since those member distributions aren’t treated as normal payroll. If your LLC is taxed as an S Corp, then the salary you earn can be part of your payroll, and any additional dividends will be separate from that. Whether or not you elect to have your LLC taxed as an S Corp and how to handle and record the money that you pay yourself is an important conversation that should be had with your accountant, bookkeeper, & attorney. Doing it the “right” way can help minimize your tax liability and can make your life (and that of your accountant) much easier come tax time. Contact Aiden and learn more at www.180lawco.com. Payroll Accounting

06:48
When an employee earns wages or salary from the company, the accounting can get a bit complicated. This is because the employee's compensation might be subject to income tax withholding, Social Security tax (FICA), unemployment tax, and/or garnishments. Thus, the amount earned by the employee will not equal the cash paid to the employee. The company would recognize a current liability for each type of tax being withheld, and those liabilities would be eliminated when the company later remits the money to the government or appropriate party. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ✅ Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/user/EducationUnlocked?sub_confirmation=1 Edspira website: https://www.edspira.com/ Edspira is the creation of Michael McLaughlin, who went from teenage homelessness to a PhD. S-corporation owner payroll

05:40
S-corporation owners are required to pay themselves on payroll. The amount has to be "reasonable," which has no definition by the IRS. A good rule of thumb is not to take more than 3 times the distributions than you have in salary. Questions or comments? Post them below! Need to contact Bette? Do you pay yourself a salary on payroll?

02:29
Do you pay yourself a salary on payroll? My accountant says I need to pay myself like an employee and then remit payroll tax ...for myself! Just wondering if this is common practice. QUESTION from Adina: Do you pay yourself a salary on payroll? My accountant says I need to pay myself like an employee and then remit payroll tax for myself. Just wondering if this is a common practice. Yes, you should be on payroll because a couple of things and I think you're in Canada. In the U.S., I can only speak for the U.S. but I'm sure it's probably pretty similar. You just pay a little bit more and hopefully we don't pay more or I guess I'll be moving there. But I digress. So what we would do is 50% of my salary or 50% of what I would get paid over the year would go into salary. The other 50 would be paid out in distributions or bonuses. The reason why I did this and my accountant did this is we have a social security tax on all our employees and so you're going to be taxed a little higher as an employee so you don't want to put all your salary on there. The other thing too is you want to show the government that you're paying in some taxes now and it's going to alleviate a lot of your big burden at the very end of the year because a lot of us don't plan for that big tax bill. Like you're just keeping a client and over client over client sign up and you're like "I'm a rockstar. I can go buy that Ferrari or that Hugo," whatever it is, and you go do that and then at the end of the year comes or the middle of the year for your taxes whenever that is, you're like crap, I got this huge tax bill and then you start scrambling. I don't want that. So it is smart to put half of your so-called pay on salary like you're an employee and then take the deductions, all that kind of stuff out of that and then the other half through distributions throughout the year or when you need it. 7 Payroll Mistakes to Avoid | Payroll Processing

02:56
7 Payroll Mistakes to Avoid http://turnkeydoc.com/accounting/payroll-timekeeping/payroll-processing/ Your business is growing. But learning how to pay employees correctly can be a little overwhelming. What Forms need to be filed or which taxes need to be collected and paid? As you probably know, Payroll involves more than just writing checks to employees. Here are 7 common mistakes to avoid. #1 is Employment Taxes. Miscalculating federal and state taxes or missing payroll tax deposits and filing deadlines can result in large penalties. #2 is improper calculations for overtime payments. Not all states are the same. Some require that Overtime start when an employee reaches 40hrs a week and others when they work more than 8 hours in one day. Check with your state department of labor website to make sure you are calculating payrolll amounts correctly. #3 is Failure to process Garnishments, Levies or Child Support Payments with payroll. This is an important one because failure to properly and timely process the wage garnishment can result in the responsibility of the employer to pay the judgment. #4 has to do with Poor Payroll Record Keeping and Data Collection. Having a clear time keeping system where the employee signs off on their time either electronically or manually can not only help protect you against potential wage claims brought by a disgruntled employee. #5 involves Payroll tax rate changes. Rates change, especially unemployment tax rates. Pay attention to all notices received and be sure to change your calculations accordingly #6 is incorrectly classifying workers as W2 Employees verse 1099 independent contractors when processing payroll. Remember, this is governed by state regulations, not by the company or worker. #7 is tracking paid time off. Estimates say that nearly every worker will take at least three paid time off days that aren't tracked by their employer when payroll is run. This can add up quickly, so tracking hours earned and taken can potentially save you thousands of dollars a year. How can you ensure you stay compliant while processing payroll? Many accountants will recommend using a professional payroll company. We tend to agree. Here’s why. Payroll companies stay on top of federal, state and local tax changes, file your tax payments, track vacation time, calculate OT and even take care of paying garnishments. Whether you decide to process payroll inhouse or with an outside company you will need tools such as time sheets and payroll entry reports. Key Elements Of Payroll | Managing The Payroll Function in United Kingdom

09:15
In this 9 minutes video I have discussed 10 Key things a payroll professional needs to know to be able to run payroll efficiently and effectively. Payroll software, Workplace pensions, PAYE (tax and NIC) class 1 primary national insurance and class 1 secondary national insurance, other deductions such as attachment of earnings order, rental, loans and advances, student loan deductions, statutory payments such as statutory maternity pay, statutory paternity pay and statutory sick pay etc., annual leave entitlements, policies and calculations, payroll forms such as p45, p60, p11d and HMRC employee starter checklist, RTI (real time information) full payment submission fps, employer payment summary eps and finalising payroll. Every month you have to pay HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC): the tax and National Insurance (and any other deductions) you owe as reported on your Full Payment Submission (FPS) in the previous tax month minus the reductions on any Employer Payment Summary (EPS) you sent before the 19th in the current tax month. Pay what you owe by the 22nd of the month (or the 19th if paying by post) - you may have to pay a penalty if you don’t. As an employer, you normally have to operate PAYE as part of your payroll. PAYE is HM Revenue and Customs’ (HMRC) system to collect Income Tax and National Insurance from employment. You don’t need to register for PAYE if none of your employees are paid £112 or more a week, get expenses and benefits, have another job or get a pension. However, you must keep payroll records. Payments and deductions When paying your employees through payroll you also need to make deductions for PAYE. Payments to your employees Payments to your employees include their salary or wages, as well as things like any tips or bonuses, or statutory sick or maternity pay. Deductions from their pay From these payments, you’ll need to deduct tax and National Insurance for most employees. Other deductions you may need to make include student loan repayments or pension contributions. Reporting to and paying HMRC Reporting pay and deductions If you run payroll yourself, you’ll need to report your employees’ payments and deductions to HMRC on or before each payday. Your payroll software will work out how much tax and National Insurance you owe, including an employer’s National Insurance contribution on each employee’s earnings above £155 a week. You’ll need to send another report to claim any reduction on what you owe HMRC, eg for statutory pay. Paying HMRC You’ll be able to view what you owe HMRC, based on your reports. You then have to pay them, usually every month. If you’re a small employer that expects to pay less than £1,500 a month, you can arrange to pay quarterly - contact HMRC’s payment enquiry helpline. Other things to report As part of your regular reports, you should tell HMRC when a new employee joins and if an employee’s circumstances change, eg they reach State Pension age or become a director. You have to run annual reports at the end of the tax year - including telling HMRC about any expenses or benefits.

When you’re just starting out in the workforce it’s important to learn the difference between gross pay and net pay. Gross pay is what you earned before deductions, like taxes. Net pay is what’s left in your check after all the deductions are taken out. So who or what is FICA? It is the Federal Insurance Contributions Act Tax, which is comprised of Social Security and Medicare taxes. It’s called a payroll tax because it takes money out of employees paychecks every pay cycle. FICA taxes are currently more than 7.5 percent of everyone’s paycheck until you reach a cap. Employers pay an equal amount of FICA taxes for each employee. And even if you don’t pay any income taxes, you still pay FICA taxes. Social Security taxes fund retirement benefits for retired workers, as well as benefits for the disabled and their dependents. The funds received for Medicare, on the other hand, are used to provide medical benefits for certain individuals when they reach age 65. Workers, retired workers, and the spouses of workers and retired workers, are eligible to receive Medicare benefits once they reach retirement age. So if you’re working, it’s your money that helps pay for those benefits. And it’s a lot of money too. In 2015, federal payroll taxes generated $1.07 trillion in revenue for the government, accounting for about one-third of all federal tax revenues.

Current Liabilities Accounting (Payroll Deductions, Employee Vs Employer Payables & Expense)

10:25
Accounting for payroll deductions as employee related liabilities, common types of payroll deductions are taxes, insurance premiums, employee savings & union dues etc., If a company has not remitted in the amounts deducted to the proper authority at the end of the accounting period, it should recognize them as a Current Liability, Examples of governmental types of payroll withholding taxes, (1) Social Security Taxes (FICA): Report the amount of unremitted tax on the gross wages paid as a Current Liability & as an Operating Expense, (2) Unemployment Taxes (FUTA): Record the amount of accrued but unpaid employer contributions as an Operating Expense & as a Current Liability when preparing financial statements and (3) Income Tax Withholding (Federal & State): Tax laws require employers to withhold from each employees pay the applicable income tax due on those wages, example explains that these withholdings have to be broken down between (1) employee payroll deductions and (2) employer payroll taxes where current liability payable accounts have to be setup for both employee and employer with wage expense for employee payroll deductions and payroll tax expense for employer payroll deductions, detailed accounting by Allen Mursau

How to Legally Avoid Payroll Tax

06:29
https://nomadcapitalist.com/tax-reduction/ While planning tax reduction strategies, people are mostly focusing on the income tax and they are neglecting the important part of the US tax system - the payroll tax. If you're not sure what it represents, this type of tax includes social security and medical care. Digital nomads, freelancers, and other people living and working overseas may avoid paying income tax, but if their company is registered in the US, they still have to pay the payroll tax. That's why opening an offshore company and employing people outside your home country may be the solution you're looking for. ------- ABOUT NOMAD CAPITALIST Andrew Henderson is the world's most sought-after consultant on legal offshore tax reduction, investment immigration, and global citizenship. How to Run Payroll with Square

02:58
Go to your Square Dashboard to start using Payroll. See all the ins and outs of the Square Payroll interface. Import timecards, or set employees’ hours manually. Set their pay rate and Square automatically takes taxes out accordingly. Employees are paid with funds taken directly from your linked bank account. Learn more at https://squareup.com/help. Keyword: Payroll. Transcription: Square Payroll helps you pay your whole team in just a few clicks. Simply import any timecards or enter your employees’ hours. We calculate all the taxes for you, and even email your employees to tell them they’ve been paid. Start by logging in to your Square Dashboard. Then, click Payroll, and Run Payroll. Here you can enter and edit your employees’ hours and earnings for your upcoming pay period. If you are tracking timecards with the Square app or a partner timecard app, simply click Import Timecards in the top-right corner. Your employees’ hours for the pay period automatically appear in the appropriate column. If you’re not using integrated timecards or would prefer to manually enter employee hours, simply click the Regular Hours column and type in each employee’s hours. To add additional earnings such as commissions, bonuses, or tips, click the plus sign on the right side of the screen to select the columns you need. Then, enter the hours or additional earnings. There are many different types of hours and earnings you can capture with Square Payroll. Regular hours are the number of hours worked during the pay period that are calculated at the hourly rate. Overtime hours are calculated at one-and-a-half times the hourly rate, and double overtime at two times the hourly rate. The Additional column lets you include any extra earnings, like commissions or bonuses. These are taxed at the normal rate. You can also add any tips your employees have earned. Paycheck tips are tips to be paid out in the paycheck, typically credit card tips. We withhold tax and include the net amount in the employee’s deposit. Cash tips are tips already paid out in cash. We calculate and withhold the tax, and don’t include this pay in the employee’s deposit. Once you’re finished with the hours and earnings page, click Continue in the top-right corner. Next, you can make any adjustments to your employees’ paycheck. Deductions can be adjusted on this screen, or added to an employee’s profile at any time. Select Continue when you’re done. Now you can see the Review page with a summary of the payroll run and exact amount to be withdrawn from your bank account. If everything looks good, click Confirm Withdrawal. We’ll withdraw funds from your bank account by 8 p.m. Pacific Time. If you need to cancel the pay run, you have until 7 p.m. Pacific Time. Square Payroll makes it easy to pay your whole team.

Entrepreneurs Should Be on Payroll, Too!

Anna shares how hiring an accountant enabled her to separate her personal and business finances and finally put herself on payroll. - - - Reality is hard sometimes. Yeah, it is. But we've come so far. My name is Anna Abramzon, and I'm an artist. I can't wait to up it up. Oh, it's so awesome. I love it. I had been trying to run my business for about six years when I realized I really needed someone who knew what they were doing in terms of accounting and finance. And in came Caroline. My name is Caroline McAbee, and I am Anna's business and financial consultant. First thing you change is the view from monthly to quarterly. I was so disorganized with my finances that the way I found out how much I spent on printing every year is, at tax time, I would email my printer and ask him, hey, how much did I pay you this year? Because he has QuickBooks, so he could just, like, send me a quick number. And that's how I did my taxes. So that's how little control I actually had over my real numbers. She's a great example of how being committed to the process and valuing the accounting side and the business side, one can achieve their goals. First of all, QuickBooks has enabled me to pay myself, which is huge. So my business finances are now separate from my personal finances. I have a business bank account. I have a business credit card. I have a business savings account for taxes. I have, like, everything all set up, and at the end of the month, I see what I can afford to pay myself, and I pay myself. And it's, like, such a treat to write yourself a check every month, you know, like, I have a salary, even though I am my own boss. And that's amazing 'cause it's, like, it gives you so much control.

From clock in to cash out—the way payroll was meant to be. Here’s the transcript: Companies spend hours of manpower each week entering and re-entering timesheet data, in the process we call payroll. Why should you have to manually enter hours when your employees already clock in and clock out every single day, logging their work hours for you? Until now, time tracking and payroll have been two separate processes. But, not anymore. Introducing Fingercheck 360, an innovative and seamless way to manage employees, from Clock in to Cash out. Finally, companies can process payroll without wasting all that time by simply combining time tracking and payroll into one! No more inputting hours worked because your employees have already done it for you, and no more human error or discrepancies because all your data is in one place with our one-point, paperless, online solution. And, when workers clock in, their payroll information is entered automatically. It’s as if your time clocks printed out paychecks, only better. Fingercheck 360 is a complete versatile hub for all your workforce management needs, applicant tracking to payroll processing and everything in between. Here’s how it works in three simple steps… One: Onboarding. Instead of stacks of paperwork, employees enter and sign all their own information online, making onboarding a breeze. Fingercheck 360 will automatically create all the necessary forms like I9’s and W4’s. Two: Clock in. Employees securely punch in from any one of our clock-in methods: fingerprint or facial recognition time-clocks, our mobile app, web and even text or twitter. Three: Cash Out! Payroll is easily processed from your web portal or mobile app with no need to input any information. Even your state and federal payroll taxes are calculated and filed with no forms to mail. Salaries are totaled, and the paychecks are sent on their way. You’ll receive an email so you can review your payroll, add any additions you’d like such as bonuses or commissions, and check that you have the appropriate funds in your account. Once confirmed, your employees receive their online paystub with a custom email thanking them for their hard work. Replace your outdated payroll procedures with the one system, one vendor one low fee solution every business needs. FingerCheck360 increases efficiency and saves you time. Making Corrections to Payroll

03:52
BrightPay UK 2015/16 Tutorial Videos - www.brightpay.co.uk Should you need to make amendments to employees’ payslips that have already been finalised, these can be re-opened and processed again. To re-open payslips in the last period processed, return to this payroll period by either clicking the ‘Previous Period’ button on the menu bar or by selecting the period on the payroll schedule. Click on ‘Re-open Payslips’ to view your list of employees. If you wish to re-open all your employees’ payslips simply click ‘All’, followed by ‘OK’. Alternatively, if you only wish to re-open payslips for some of your employees, tick the employee or employees required and click ‘OK’. These payslips will now be available for editing and finalising again. To re-open more than one finalised period for one or more of your employees, select the period you wish to go back to on the payroll schedule Click on ‘Re-open Payslips’ to view your list of employees. Please note this procedure will re-open all subsequent payroll periods you have finalised for the employees you select. If you wish to re-open all your employees’ payslips again simply click ‘All’, followed by ‘OK’. Alternatively, if you only wish to re-open payslips for some of your employees, tick the employee or employees required and click ‘OK’. This pay period as well as all subsequent pay periods will now be open for processing the selected employees again. If you have already submitted one or more Full Payment Submissions to HMRC for the payslips you have re-opened, if the employee's pay date matches the pay date that was included in the original FPS, an amended FPS will not be created on re-finalising. Instead an Additional FPS can subsequently be created and submitted to HMRC to report the change. If a different pay date is used on the employee's payslip, a new FPS will be created and can be submitted to HMRC immediately. If an FPS has been created but not yet submitted to HMRC, any amendments made to an employee's payslip will be automatically updated within the unsent FPS when the payslip is finalised again. If all employees’ payslips are re-opened, the unsent FPS will be deleted altogether. Please note, if you discover an error in any of the year to date totals submitted in your final FPS or Additional FPS for the tax year and it is now after 19th April following the end of the tax year, then only an Earlier Year Update (EYU) can be submitted. An EYU simply reports the adjustment made in the payroll as opposed to reporting restated year to date totals for the tax year to HMRC. For example, if you previously submitted a year to date pay figure of £10,000 for an employee on your last FPS for the year, then realise that the figure should have been £12,000, after making the correction, the EYU will submit the change to the pay figure as ‘+£2000’. To submit an EYU, first re-open the payslips, make your amendments and finalise accordingly. Next, in the RTI menu, select Earlier Year Update (EYU) from the New menu and submit to HMRC. California Supreme Court rules payroll companies cannot be named a co-defendants in wage claims

Goonewardene v. ADP, LLC: California Supreme Court ruled that payroll companies cannot be named as co-defendants with the employer in litigation brought by employee alleging defective wage statements under Labor Code section 226 or derivative tort theories. The Court rejected Plaintiff’s contention that she could name the payroll company along with her employer as defendants in a lawsuit for unpaid wages under the causes of action claiming that the payroll company breached its contract with the employer, negligence, and negligent misrepresentation. Payroll Deductions and Benefits in Cloud Based Canadian Payroll with eNETEmployer Online

18:05
This lesson will discuss how to work with payroll Deductions and Benefits in eNETEmployer. The lesson will focus primarily on non-statutory Deductions that are setup by your company. There are many examples of these types, such as dental plan premiums, life insurance premiums, pension contributions, union dues, garnishee orders, and so on. Statutory deduction amounts, such as Income Tax, CPP, E.I., Premiums, etc., are automatically calculated by the program and do not require any added setup. In many situations both deductions and benefits are related. Therefore when you create a Deduction item in eNETEmployer, a corresponding Benefit item is also created, and vice versa. You then have the option of utilizing the deduction only, the benefit only, or both. To begin, choose the Current Payroll - Deductions menu command. This opens the Deductions page that allows us to enter our company's non-statutory Deductions - amounts that are subtracted from the employee's pay by the company. Deductions can be calculated based on a Function, Individually, or as a Fixed Amount. Each row also contains a Carry Forward Year End Balance option for specifying whether the deduction's year-end balance should be carried forward to the subsequent year, as opposed to zeroing out the balance at year end. Section - Create a Deduction To begin defining the settings for a new deduction, select the New button, enter a name for the deduction, and then place a check in the As Deduction cell to instruct the program to calculate the deduction in the current payroll. Place a check in the Before Tax cell to indicate that the deduction will be made before the employee's tax is calculated. The RRSP Deduction will need to be calculated based on a Function. Therefore, click on the drop down list and choose the By Function option to specify the deduction's calculation method. With the method chosen, you must now create an associated function. However, since we have not yet created an RRSP Function that will be associated with our new RRSP Deduction, we will leave the Calculate Function cell with the default setting while we move to the Functions page to create the associated function. Section - Creating a Function Move to the Functions page by choosing the Current Payroll - Functions command, and then select the New button. Enter RRSP Deduction into the Function cell, then select the Add Variable button three times. Set the Items for the four variable rows to Earning Regular, Statutory Pay, Salary and Commission, and then move to the Expression cell and modify the expression to read (x1 + x2 + x3 +x4)*.04. This function will take the sum of the four variables for each employee, and then multiply the result by 4%. Return to the Deductions page and apply the new function by selecting the RRSP Deduction function from the drop down list in the Calculate Functions column. Section - Modifying a Benefit In our demo payroll, we will also be utilizing the Benefit portion since the employer will be matching each employee's contribution amount. To edit the required benefit settings, move to the Current Payroll menu and choose the Benefits command. When the page appears, double-click on the RRSP Deduction row, and then place a check in the As Benefit cell. This signifies that the program should include the benefit portion in the payroll calculations. Next, T4-4- Other Taxables option from the T4 Box Benefits cell's drop down list. Then move to the Subject To cell and place a check in all of the boxes except for Quebec Tax. Next, we will move to the Calculate Benefits cell and choose the By Function option to specify, and then apply the appropriate function by choosing the new RRSP Deduction function in the Calculate Function cell. This completes the procedure for defining a Deduction and its associated Benefit in eNETEmployer. Although this particular deduction used a straightforward function that multiplied the sum of an employee's earnings by a set percentage, keep in mind that you can create complex deductions by using the Functions page to define intricate formulas through the use of If statements and other operators, such as MinN, MaxN, Sum, Sqrt(), and so on. For detailed descriptions of this feature, you can open the Online Help system by pressing F1 on your keyboard, and then browsing to the Functions page.
