5 Business Trends for 2018
The year 2018 will be a crucial year for electric vehicles. Manufacturers are speeding up production plans as cities pass new regulations restricting the use of internal combustion engines. At the same time, IESE Professor Marc Sachon notes that another new and different challenge is emerging: what to do with old batteries. Recycling is expensive and countries like China still haven’t invested in that area; secondary markets for used batteries as home generators are small. Also to watch out for: the geopolitics of sources of two strategic minerals in batteries: lithium and cobalt. Zaire holds half the reserves of cobalt, and 60% of lithium reserves are concentrated in just three countries. Cartelization risks, says professor Juan Luis López Cardenete, should not be overlooked. Sustainability is also a crucial trend for the food and beverage industry. Consumers are pushing for healthier, organic and local products. The US has seen the rise of the first companies rating sustainability, explains professor Adrián Caldart, and positive marks can triple demand for some products. In the healthcare sector, sharing information on health outcomes is the main trend. According to Professor Núria Mas, this will shift the debate to what’s really important, measuring whether implementation is efficient, instead of focusing on whether the provider is public or private. Finally, for 2018 banks are expected to recover their profitability as interest rates rise. But as their core business becomes more attractive, Professor Juan José Toribio warns that new and potentially disruptive entrants such as Google or Amazon might start providing financial services.

Five 2017 Tech Trends for Food and Beverage Businesses
The impact of technology on the food service industry continues to be widespread, but here is a brief look at five technologies changing the restaurant industry: Payment Security Let’s face it: Security breaches are only going to get more sophisticated. Chip credit cards are supposed to help but only a small number of businesses have switched. Apple Pay or Samsung Pay is more secure than physically swiping a card but adoption has thus far been slow. Online Transactions online transactions in general are quickly gaining traction. one in five consumers bought or browsed for products or services (including meals and beverages) using mobile devices during last year’s holiday shopping season. The number is much higher among the 18 to 34 age group. This shows a foodservice business’s online presence is more essential than ever. Employee Productivity Software can help speed up the ordering process—even with self-ordering kiosks— so more attention can be given to kitchen production and efficient service thus reducing labor costs and maximizing efficiencies. Another Sign of the End of Paper? Some kitchens, instead of planning menus on paper, are migrating to kitchen-planning platform that runs on a tablet. The digital tool benefits multi-location restaurants because managers can make recipe and menu updates from a central spot. The software can also create prep lists and print food safety labels. Food Allergen Spot Check Diners with food allergies can leverage apps to locate restaurants with safe menu options. Apps can help users find restaurants and stores with gluten-free offerings or restaurants that can handle special dietary needs. Restaurants have benefited from rapid changes in technology for years, but 2016 may be the year we see an even more noticeable impact of technology on food services. Crowd-Streaming Facebook Live allows you to broadcast live on Facebook with just your smartphone and then makes the video available in your stream afterwards, giving it preference over other content. You can use it and so can your attendees. Think of creative ways to encourage broadcasts and you’ll increase your word-of-mouth marketing and reach. 2. Personalized Offerings As data gets more and more sophisticated we are seeing event planners use it as a way to predict interests, shape offerings, streamline registration and sell more tickets. Past actions are influencing the marketing message visitors see and enable us to retarget warm leads, for greater conversion rates. Participants can benefit from a customized event experience through personalized agendas they can shape on their own, automated networking suggestions based on past activity and interests, and auto-scheduled suggestions to help them make the most of attending the event. 3. The Softer Side Topics like mindfulness, soft skills, and emotional intelligence will continue to be hot topics in sessions. You can also look to increase your offering in other areas, like creating sensory lounges where attendees can enjoy some down time without retreating to their hotel rooms. 4. Active Year-Round Marketing Building word-of-mouth will soon be the only organic way to reach attendees. This means following them on social media, reaching out to industry influencers, listening for mentions, interacting with past attendees, creating an online community for recurring events, and other ways to engage throughout the year. These actions will help to draw more sponsors and attendees. 5. Informal Thought Labs Less formal presentations are a top trend as there is growing interest in equality between speakers and the audience. Attendees are looking for a unique learning opportunity based on the person starting the discussion and the interaction of the audience. These informal sessions hold attention longer, are more memorable, and allow the audience to address the issues they are most concerned with. In Conclusion These 5 areas are top trends we are seeing in corporate event planning. In particular, personalization through data is a massive growing trend for event planners. Attendees are beginning to expect this as they see companies adapt their marketing and sales approach to each consumer. Are you ready to incorporate these trends into your corporate events? ---------------------------------------- This was brought to you by EventMB, the number one blog for event professionals.
